News Reporter Saves Woman Whose Vehicle Has Been Swept Into Floodwaters

A News reporter saved a woman whose vehicle has been swept into floodwaters during Dallas’ deadly storm.

On August 22, “a summer’s worth of rain in a day,” poured in Dallas starting on Sunday night. The record-breaking rain of at least 15-inches resulted in intense flooding in many parts of the city. Sadly, the deadly storm took a life of a 60-year-old woman whose body has been recovered in her submerged car after the floodwaters receded.

But amidst the heartbreaking news of the flood’s devastation, a positive report of how a woman’s life was saved thanks to the help of a journalist broke out. While Fox Weather reporter Robert Ray was reporting about the Texas flood on Monday morning, a vehicle right in front of him was swept into the floodwaters.

“She literally, as I was standing here setting up for the shot, guys, pulled in and didn’t realize it,” Robert said. “The next thing you know, her car was floating. So, I went out there and tried to push her vehicle as best I could.”

As her vehicle started to float, he began to fear for her life, she thought that she was about to die.

“I thought I was dying,” Stephanie Carroll, the driver of the vehicle, recalled. “I thought I was going to die, I thought I was going to drown.”

Robert knew he had to do something to save the woman’s life so he tried to push the vehicle to safety. However, the vehicle didn’t move. He quickly thought of another way to save her so he pulled him out of her window. Stephanie called Robert a blessing from God for saving her life.

“I want to tell him ‘Thank you,’ because he really did help me out. He’s awesome, a blessing from God actually.”

Apparently, Stephanie didn’t see the floodwaters as he drove through until she started to float. Thankfully, Robert is in the right place at the right time when it all happened.

Let us pray for the city of Dallas as they recover from the destruction the storm has caused.

Kentucky Pastor Helps Hundreds Of People Greatly Affected By Deadly Flooding

A Kentucky pastor is helping hundreds of people greatly affected by deadly flooding two weeks ago.

About two weeks ago, heavy rains fell in eastern Kentucky, causing intense flooding in the community. The heavy rain started on the evening of July 26 and lasted for about a week. Hundreds of people have lost their property, and their livelihood, and some even lost their loved ones as the flooding took the lives of 38 people.

Pastor Brad Stevens of the Church of God Worship Center in Clay County, knew that he had to do something to help these people. He felt the Holy Spirit convicting him to be the “hands and feet of Jesus” at that moment. When the rain stopped, the pastor went out to help those in need.

“I began seeing the devastation and finding people who were trapped and couldn’t get out. … I saw needs changing from day to day. There were a lot more people that needed help than we anticipated. But, God has somehow made a way,” the pastor said.

Flood Victims

He called for help through his social media account for donations to aid the affected people. “Generous” donors from across the United States stepped in to help. The pastor was able to provide aid to over 300 residents greatly affected by the flooding. He gave them food and water and even helped them in rebuilding their homes.

“Some of the most difficult things to see is the fact that there are so many of these folks that have lost everything. And they go to their homes, and they see everything is destroyed and out in a pile in their yard getting ready to be hauled away in a garbage truck,” he described.

Praying with the Community

Aside from alleviating their physical needs, Pastor Brad also helped them with their trauma. He talked to them, counseled them, and even prayed with them.

“There has been a lot of prayers and just being there for them. And I’ve seen that it has been beneficial for some people when I don’t say anything and just let them talk and share their experiences. It’s like it gives them a sense of relief to be able to just talk to somebody. And you can almost sense the anxiety leaving as they get out what they haven’t been able to speak about. So, we’ve just been an ear to listen,” pastor Brad detailed.

“And other times, you know, we’re called to counsel and pray and try to do what we can to encourage and help them,” he added.

Let us pray for those affected by the flood that they may find comfort, peace, and shelter in the Lord. And that they may be able to rebuild their homes and get back on their feet again.

Heidi Baker Calls For Urgent Help As Mozambique Deals With Devastating Aftermath of Cyclone Idai

You may have seen the shocking news coverage of a nation still submerged after Cyclone Idai. According to the BBC at least 300 people are now confirmed dead due to the “catastrophic flooding” and others are still “clinging to roofs or stuck in trees.”

The network has described parts of Mozambique as having become ‘an inland sea.’

“We are 15 miles from the sea, but it feels as if we are right over it,” BBC Africa editor, Fergal Keane said during a helicopter flight over some of the worst-affected areas.

Thousands of people have been affected in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi and the death toll is expected to rise. Charities on the ground are calling for immediate assistance and one of these is led by our dear friend Heidi Baker of Iris Global who is often featured in our programming.

She and her husband Rolland have been missionaries to Mozambique for close on 25 years and in God’s providence are right there on the ground in this present disaster. It is being referred to as “one of the worst to hit the Southern Hemisphere” with over 1.5 million people affected and many lives still at risk.

“In the last few days a massive cyclone has ripped through our nation destroying nearly 90 percent of the city of Beira and surrounding villages. People are desperate…” says Heidi who is working with other aid agencies on the ground to “be the hands and feet and heart of Jesus” in this crisis.

Pray for Mozambique and Zimbabwe and give towards the relief efforts through Iris Relief.

Pray for the Victims of Flooding in Kerala, India

Gospel for Asia (GFA) has issued an urgent appeal for help in responding to some of the worst flooding in almost a century that has claimed several hundred lives and displaced nearly a quarter of a million people in southern India.

GFA-supported workers have already begun distributing emergency supplies to some of the victims of the torrential rain in Kerala state, which has disrupted transportation and communication. Official rescue and relief efforts are also getting underway in many places with government help.

Some people have had to be rescued from rooftops by helicopter and by boat, while buildings and bridges have been swept away. Thirteen of Kerala’s 14 districts have been affected in what chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has called an “extremely grave” crisis.

While GFA-supported workers are gathering dry ration kits containing food, clean water and other essentials like clothes, tarps and toiletries, they are still waiting to learn the full extent of their own losses from the flooding in the region, where they have been involved in a wide range of caring ministries for decades. So far, at least one church led by a GFA-supported pastor and several Bridge of Hope centers are known to have been damaged.

“I have never seen rain like this in my life,” said GFA founder, Dr. K.P. Yohannan. “No matter which way I look, it is like I am surrounded by an ocean of water. Many have escaped with only the clothes on their backs. To rebuild and restore what has been lost will take time. We are doing all we can to help those in immediate need, and we are asking people everywhere to stand with us through prayers and giving so that we can do more to bring comfort and care in the name of Jesus.”

In a special emergency appeal report posted at GFA’s website, video footage from GFA-supported workers in the area shows water surging up the side of buildings, and people lining up to be taken away by boat.

Standing in water that covers the main local highway, Dr. Daniel Johnson, leader of GFA-supported medical ministry, says, “We are helping. We are trying to do what we can, but do pray. There is a lot more help we need.”

Let’s Rally in Prayer for Sri Lanka!

Landslides and floods in Sri Lanka have killed at least 151 people and the country faces the risk of more mudslides as torrential rains continue.

More than 150 people are still missing after the worst rains on the island since 2003.

The state-run National Building Research Organization warned people in 15 out of the country’s 25 districts of the possible need to evacuate from the hill slopes should the rains continue.

I visited the Southern District of Matara, where a river burst its banks, causing havoc to the nearby towns and villages, with water reaching over 15 feet in height, on land, wiping out homes, communities and moreover entire families.

As of 2nd June 2017, a tea estate community of 30 families was unaccounted for after a mass landslide. The entire slope they lived on became a muddy grave, making it near impossible for rescue teams to even approach the site.

My journey to these areas educated me of the fact that it takes only a moment in time to reduce to zero, what took years of labor to achieve. The average individual household has to depend on a daily labor wage of USD$ 3.30 per family of four to five persons, which begs the question, how do they restart their lives, when they do not earn not enough wages to even enjoy two square meals a day?

On the positive side, the nation rose to this challenge with thousands of individuals rallying to help along with corporate bodies, nonprofit organizations, the army, navy, airforce, and all local TV stations who joined forces to get food, water, and basic toiletries to many affected areas.

The challenge for the immediate future lies in school children who have lost all their books, tuition notes, uniforms to their parents losing the very homes they lived in, to modes of transport where the bicycle or three wheeler was taken on a loan, have been wiped off their road to progress.

The Government has assured those affected that assistance would come their way, but in realistic terms, this will only take them back to the life they had, which was not much for starters and will take many seasons to achieve.
My appeal to anyone reading this blog, is to take it upon themselves to try and assist at least one person or a family in some area in their attempt to return to the path of moving forward. International and local aid will cease the moment another calamity takes place in another area of the island or place in the world, but these folks have to return to some state of normalcy or mere survival for many years to come.
