Students Across US Participates In Bring Your Bible To School Day

Students across the United States are participating in Bring Your Bible To School Day today, October 6.

Bring Your Bible to School Day

Bring Your Bible to School Day is an annual event sponsored by Focus On The Family, a global ministry dedicated to helping families thrive. Over the past years, hundreds of thousands of students participated in the one-day nationwide event. This year, the event will be celebrated today, October 6.

“It is crucial our students today understand the importance of God’s Word as not only one of the most historically influential books of all time — but that it is the words of life that give us a window into the heart of our creator,” Emerson Collins, Bring Your Bible to School spokesperson and project manager, said. “Perhaps now more than ever, the truth of scripture and the Gospel must be proclaimed.”

The Bring Your Bible to School Day was first launched in 2014. Since then, it has grown into a nationwide movement. Every year, parents are posting pictures of their children with their Bibles as they went off to school. In 2021, over 500,000 students participated in the event.

“Bring Your Bible to School Day is a terrific opportunity for our nation’s students to boldly and freely put feet to their faith,” Jim Daly, president, and CEO of Focus on the Family explained. “In this day and age of shifting values and children desperate for hope and help, it comes at the perfect time. Reminding all Americans of the principles of civility, free expression, and fair and open dialogue.”

Skillet’s John Cooper promoted the event on social media emphasizing the importance of the Word of God.

“We are living in a time where truth can be whatever you want it to be. It’s my truth, it’s your truth, or the truth is changing,” he said. “The Bible says the sum of [His] word is truth, and that is good news because what it means is that you can actually live a life built on sure footing in the word of God because His truth never ever changes.”

President Jim Daly of Focus on the Family opens up about his journey in growing up in a severely broken family and how God redeemed his painful childhood experiences for His glory.

Focus On The Family

Dr. James Dobson founded the Focus on the Family Christian organization. According to its website, it is a Colorado-based “Christian ministry dedicated to helping families thrive.” In its heartfelt mission to help families, the ministry has become global. Then in 2005, the founder passed the leadership to Jim Daly.

In an interview with Faithwire, Jim admitted he felt unworthy of what he was given. He felt “very inadequate” because of his past. He had a very dysfunctional family, which led to a tragic childhood. Hence, the new CEO felt inadequate.

Growing Up In A Broken Family

Jim apparently grew up in an unsafe environment. His alcoholic father abandoned him. At the same time, his mom died when he was still young.

“I came from such brokenness,” he said. “But it does suggest that the Lord has it all. This is all His — the broken parts and the things that are going well — and it really gave me a certain confidence to walk into the role and try to do the best job that I could do in bringing Focus on the Family forward.”

Helping Orphans

As a result, the ministry birthed the “Wait No More” initiative in 2008 for orphans because of Jim’s own story.

The new Focus on the Family President received Christ when he heard the Gospel because of another Christian ministry. Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ outreach efforts led Jim to know Jesus. He heard about his Father in heaven, who would never let him down, unlike what his earthly father did.

“[The speaker] said, ‘Come forward and accept the love of a Father who will never let you down,'” Daly recounted. “And I said, ‘Yes, yes.’ And I would hope all your listeners and viewers would investigate that, if they don’t know the Lord.”

Further, because of Jim’s unlikely experiences growing up, he could feel more compassion towards struggling families.

“I remember having this discussion with the Lord, ‘I can’t do this. I’m not qualified,” he detailed. “I’m not good enough,’ all those doubts that come in. And I just felt the Lord say in my spirit, ‘Hey, I have given you every family type so you know how to speak to it.’ I had the normal dysfunctional family, then I had the single-parent family. Then I had a stepdad, then I had foster family, then I had a single-parent father for a year. Then he passed away when I was 11 and I moved in with my brother through junior high and high school. So it is kind of unique.”

Jim acknowledges that God had prepared him for this very mission to help families thrive for His glory. And although it was a painful and lonely journey, he is still “grateful for it.”

“God was merciful,” he added. “He showed me grace, He brought great mentors around me, and obviously, it made all the difference.”

Indeed, the Lord is the great Redeemer!

Dr James Dobson: A Voice for Traditional Family Values

It is evident through his 42 years of ministry that Dr James Dobson has a passion for the family. Through my years of listening to his messages and reading his books, I have learned to be a better husband and a father. Dr Dobson has a firm belief that parents have the ultimate and unique responsibility to raise godly children. It is more than providing a stable atmosphere. Dobson says, “Sometimes we’re so concerned about giving our children what we never had growing up. We neglect to give them what we did have growing up.”

Dr James Dobson focuses his ministry on starting young and instilling Christian values. Therefore, when children grow up, they can change the world for Christ.

Dr James Dobson: Early Ministry

Dr James Dobson was born into a Christian home. The son of a pastor, he accepted Christ at the age of 3. He has been quoted saying that he learned to pray even before he learned to walk. He traveled extensively as his parents were traveling evangelists.

James felt that he had a calling to be a psychologist. He studied and eventually earned his doctorate in psychology. Dr Dobson served as an associate clinical professor of pediatrics for 14 years.

“One of the most important responsibilities in the Christian life is to care about others. Smile at them, and be a friend to the friendless.”

In 1970 he wrote a child-rearing book titled Dare to Discipline. This publication made him well-known for addressing the controversial topic of spanking a child as a form of discipline. It also created a path that would lead to a radio program that addressed family matters.

Dr James Dobson: Focus on the Family

During a leave of absence from Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, he began an organization, “Focus on the Family,” in 1977. It began with a 25-minute weekly radio program. In 1980, it was expanded to a daily 15-minute program, and a year later expanded to 30-minutes.

“If we can prevent just one marriage from disintegrating – or just one child from suffering the loss of a family – our effort will be justified.”

Over the following years, Focus on the Family would produce seminars by Dr James Dobson, a monthly magazine, several family-focused movies, and publish books with family values. It also began airing a 30-minute television program and many other tenants of the ministry, like “Adventures in Odyssey,” a children’s radio program.

Dobson led the organization until 2003 when he stepped down from the leadership role. He eventually handed over the reins of his daily television program to Jim Daily in 2010.

Dr James Dobson: Family Talk

Shortly after his departure from Focus on the Family, Dr James Dobson began a new ministry, “Family Talk.” This ministry held to the founding principles that made Focus on the Family such a great success – traditional family values that emphasized that the family is key to making changes in the world around us.

“I don’t want to make a mistake that would hurt the cause of Christ late in my life. So, I’m going to do everything I can to bring many people to Christ. If He can use me in that regard through ‘Family Talk,’ that will be my greatest legacy.”

The ministry offers a daily television program, monthly newsletters, articles and blogs, all available on-demand through its website.

Today’s Message

Dr James Dobson has served as an evangelical advisor to many presidents, including sitting President Donald Trump. He hopes to be part of Christ’s voice in religious matters of the US when called upon.

“God has called us to be His representatives in our nation and in our world. Select candidates who represent your views and work for their election.”

In 1981, Dr James Dobson founded the Family Research Council. It aimed to promote the advancement of faith, family, and freedom in public society, from a Christian worldview. They are advocates for family values and lobby for laws and legislation that support family issues.

Today, Family Talk is still going strong. Its daily program can be heard in all 50 states and is available across the globe online. He has authored over 30 books to influence teens, adults, and parents to live godly lives. His ultimate aim is to help families make a difference to the next generation.

Focus On The Family is Helping Families Thrive

As time marches on, we are witnessing the decline of the family unit. Today, we see more and more single-parent homes, children with four parents, or if both parents are present, little attention is paid to the child. It is no wonder why this generation lacks respect for authority figures – they have no security, so they become resentful of any adult that is around, even one that means to help. Focus On The Family aims to begin with the parents. When a marriage is strong, the family unit is strong. They believe that a healthy parent/child relationship is rooted in a devoted husband/wife relationship; all with Christ at the center.

Leadership Team

Focus On The Family was founded in 1977 by James Dobson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is a ministry that preaches traditional family values. They aid parents to rely on Biblical principles in their marriage and in raising their children.

- - James Dobson – Dobson is a psychologist from Southern California. He founded the ministry and ran it until 2003. He stepped down of his leadership role but remained active until 2010 when he handed over the reins to Jim Daily. Today he is the head of another ministry he founded. He speaks on a radio show, Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson.
  - Jim Daily – Daily has been with the ministry for 30 years. He began as an assistant to the president and worked his way around the ministry as director and eventually vice president of the International Division. He also served as chief operating officer and then selected to be the next president of the organization.

Ministry Arms

Focus On The Family has always based its teaching on traditional Biblical values. While in today’s society, these are extremely controversial, they maintain their stance in defense of the Christ-centered family. They provide resources to build healthy marriages and for parents to raise children with morals and a scripture-based value system.

Among these resources are:

- - Daily Broadcast – A daily 30-minute radio program hosted by Jim Daily that encourages parents and families in daily life. Topics range from how to strengthen your marriage to understanding your teenager.
  - Adventures in Odyssey – This weekly program is targeted at children 8 – 12. It spreads the message of faith and Christian values through the adventures of the children living in Odyssey. The central place children meet is at the local ice cream shop, Whit’s End. Children come to Whit for advice, and each episode has a central theme to teach children about life lessons. It first aired in 1988, aimed to be an alternative to Saturday morning cartoons. It still airs today, and the animated version can be found on GOD TV on Saturday mornings at 7:30 AM.
  - Boundless – Young Adult programming aimed to give a Biblical structure to life events from dating to the journey of becoming independent.
  - Wait No More – A resource that reaches out to families that have adopted children, and help point those who want to adopt in the right direction.
  - Topic-Based Podcasts – Topics include marriage and parenting. The messages provide tips and encouragement to husbands and wives, moms and dads to have a deeper connection with each other and their children.
  - Plugged In – A thirty-second spot that gives a review of current movies, video games, and music. They rate these media sources based on how family, or kid, friendly they are.

Global Outreach

The Focus On The Family ministry reaches not only U.S. residents but has a global impact.

- - Associate Offices – 12 different countries have local offices that help spread the ministry resources, from the daily radio broadcast to Adventures in Odyssey. The international offices also create their own ministry opportunities in the country they serve with targeted messages according to the area’s culture.
  - No Apologies – Another ministry aimed at teens up to 22-year-olds. This curriculum is abstinence-based and means to teach the next generation the truth about “life, love, and sex.” This program shows that promiscuity is not only an American issue; it is a world-wide problem.

GOD TV and Focus On The Family

God TV airs Adventures in Odyssey on Saturday mornings at 7:30 AM.

You can also find Focus On The Family produced movies through GOD TV On Demand. The docu-movie Irreplaceable is available now for you to watch. It asks the question, “Does family matter?” In the middle of today’s ever-evolving definition of what a family is, the hosts desire to “recover, renew, and reclaim” the conversation of family.

Live Ultrasound Of A Third-Trimester Baby To Air In Times Square

Focus On The Family is gearing up to broadcast a live ultrasound of a third-trimester baby on monitors and screens in Time Square. This is in response to the decision New York and other states have taken to legalize abortion up until birth.

“We’ll have great speakers. We’re going to have music, but we’re also going to do a live ultrasound of a third-trimester baby,” Jim Daly, President of Focus on the Family, explained.

“Looks Like A 1-Year-Old Baby”

Jim also describes the ultrasound of a third-trimester baby:

“With the 4-D technology we have, it looks like a picture of a 1-year-old,” he noted. “There is no way a person is going to be able to say, ‘That is not a child.’ It is a child, and we want everybody to see it.”

He also called out to the Commonwealth of Virginia after Governor Ralph Northam declared that some babies should be allowed to die right after being born.

“If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen,” Northam told Washington, DC radio station WTOP. “The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”

Infanticide

Virginia leaders are effectively promoting infanticide.

“Once a baby is born, if it’s not viable outside the womb or if it’s severely handicapped, they’re going to let the baby sit on a table, and then the mother and physician decide whether or not to let that baby live – that’s not the country we live in. And that’s not the law of the land, actually,” Jim charged.

He also noted that this is not something new for Christians. This already happened thousands of years ago in ancient Rome. But it was the Christians who saved the babies who were thrown out in the garbage to die. An ultrasound blasted on the screens of Times Square is one of the attempts of Christians to protest against infanticide.

“So this isn’t anything new, but it was the Christians that stood up and said ‘No. Everyone human is made in God’s image, and we can’t destroy innocent human beings,'” Jim said.
