Kim Walker-Smith: The Story Behind “Throne Room”

Intentional Lyrics

In a recent interview, Kim openly and honestly explains the story behind her new song, as well as the song’s significance in her own life.

According to Kim, she and her team of writers and friends paid close attention to all aspects of this song. They wrote with great intentionality: “Every lyric, every melody is all pushing and encouraging and cheering the listener on to get in the presence of God.”

The song’s lyrics proclaim the majesty of God: “One look at You and I’m undone … I fall on my face with angels and saints and all I can say is Holy, holy, holy are You.” These bold lyrics naturally flow from her personal experience in the presence of God.

Her own experience is reminiscent of the prophet Isaiah’s, who recalled, “One [angel] called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3).

With her lyrics, Kim beckons believers who have yet to enter into God’s presence to come near and experience the joy and peace of an intimate relationship with God.

Kim’s Personal Story

In another interview, Kim discussed her new album as a whole, explaining that it portrays “the real and the raw” of her relationship with God. For the past several years, no matter what she has encountered, she has discovered Jesus walking beside her–step for step.

Her fervent desire for the entire album is that listeners would embark on this amazing faith journey with her. She accomplishes this goal by drawing in listeners with her raw emotion and one-of-a-kind voice that is perfectly designed to lead worship.

Specifically, when it comes to “Throne Room,” Kim hopes that listeners will not be afraid to enter into the presence of God–during both the highs and lows of life. She exclaims, “I hope that [this song] helps to pull [listeners] into the presence of God, just like it does for me.”

So what do you do when you are faced with life’s troubles?

In today’s world, it is all too easy to text a friend or log onto Netflix to forget about your problems. But at least in my own case, troubles always seem to rear their ugly heads down the road–especially in the dark, lonely veil of night.

Without the transformational power of God’s presence, despair comes quickly. But by regularly encountering God during a personal quiet time, you can overcome sadness as you experience and trust His unparalleled might.

God’s presence will not eliminate your problems, but it will equip you with radical, unshakeable joy and peace.
