“God is good? Huh! If He is good, why do so many bad things happen in the world? Why does He do nothing about wars and tragedies? Why does He allow poverty? Also, if is a loving God the where is that love? Why did He allow me to be broken? Why am I in pain? Why is everything falling apart? Why are bad things happening all around me? Why did He not protect a family member who was killed?”
You may be one of the many people who, at some point in their lives, question God about these things. With the tangible reality we see around us, one can’t help but ask who is responsible for all the awful things that happen in the world. And perhaps, because we believe God to be Sovereign, we blame Him even for the most unfortunate happenings. However, is God accountable for all of this?
The Word of God is clear about this. In John 10:10 we read: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Jesus explains that the only purpose of the enemy is to destroy life, but God’s purpose for us is to receive abundant life. Therefore, the destruction, the pain, the wars, the tragedies, poverty, and all suffering is not His doing. Satan is responsible for that.
In this 8-minute excerpt from the movie “The Shack,” the lead character, Mackenzie Allen Phillips (Mack) plays the role of a father who is angry at God. He blames God for the awful things that happened to his precious little daughter who was murdered. In Mack’s mind, if God is a loving Father God, then why didn’t He save his daughter during that tragic incident. However, God brings Mack to a higher perspective about his life-long struggle, that sets him free.
