A 3-week-old premature baby wins her battle against the coronavirus making her one of Scotland’s youngest COVID-19 patients.
Premature baby
On March 26, Tracy Maguire gave birth to the sweet Peyton Elizabeth via C-section. Peyton was eight weeks premature and only weighs 1.5 kg.
The new mom was told that she may have pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure, so she was sent to Wishaw General Hospital in Lanarkshire.
In the following weeks, little Peyton showed the slightest, almost undetectable symptoms of coronavirus, a sniffle, and few coughs.
Positive for coronavirus
Tracy’s heart was broken as she watched the doctors insert a swab to her tiny nose for testing.
“It was the first time I’d seen my baby cry tears,” Tracy said. “I held her, I was crying and we were just trying to get each other through the situation.”
Peyton’s test for the virus turned out positive, but the medical staff worked hard to keep the premature baby well.
“They said ‘she’s fine, don’t panic – but she has tested positive for coronavirus’,” she said.
Recovery
After almost a month courageously fighting for her life, Peyton finally was able to go home. She was cleared of coronavirus after two negative test results.
“She showed everybody how much she is an absolute fighter and she’s got a wee character,” Tracy said. “I just keep thinking to myself right it did not go as planned but she is perfect in every single way and we couldn’t have been luckier for that. If we can take a positive from this is the fact that even though she had coronavirus, she is still here.”
Prayer for all patients
Tracy and husband John urged everyone to pray for those who are still fighting for their lives.
“For all the people that were praying for our girl please give all your wonderful prayers to the people that are still in the hospital, still at risk and still suffering with COVID-19.”
