A Pennsylvania church takes worship into the waters to stay connected amidst coronavirus as worshippers floated in kayaks.
Pennsylvania Church
The Faith United Church of Christ in State College, Pennsylvania found a creative and unique way to safely gather together amidst the pandemic. Worshipers ride on kayaks to attend church’s Sunday services. Each attendee is required to wear a facemask and float a safe distance apart from other attendees.
The Center County’s Bald Eagle State Park lake was filled with colorful kayaks last Sunday. More than two dozen people attended the worship service while observing safety measures to avoid contracting the coronavirus.
Worship in waters
Rev. Jes Kast, Faith United Church of Christ pastor, preached the Word of God last weekend. He talked about Psalm 24 and how nature and other living things work together to outlive disasters.
“My hope is that it serves as an encouragement to you to try some new things and be open to innovating in this unusual season of our lives,” Rev. Jes wrote on a tweet following the service.
Kayaks
She praised God for the chance to meet in a marvelous place. Many of the congregants have gathered on that lake for the first time since COVID-19 broke out in the nation. Rev. Jes then encouraged everyone and assured them that they’re not alone during this time of uncertainty.
“If we fall in, we will remember our baptism this morning,” she said to the worshippers. “We as a church are sticking together. We’re helping each other out, we’re breathing together in our little pockets. We’re coming together as one to support and encourage each other.”
Church is People
In the past months, the pastor has uploaded sermons to their church’s YouTube channel. Zoom church services have also been available for the church since regular services have been postponed.
“Church,’ however, is people. We’re still open,” the church’s website assures.
