King David is undoubtedly one of the prominent characters in the Bible. His life and relationship with God has been the standard to measure against the succeeding kings. And the impact of his Psalms can still be felt today. So, let us learn more about this “man who is after God’s own heart.”
King David
David was the youngest son of Jesse, who was the grandson of Ruth and Boaz. His position in the family made him the minor candidate to bring honor to his father. So, Jesse made him tend their flock of sheep.
Unknowingly, it was in David’s job as a shepherd that he created history with God. That is why when Goliath tried to defy Israel’s army, David boldly said, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear (who attacked the sheep) will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:37)
David’s victory against Goliath eventually became prolific in literature, art, and culture that it turned out to be a symbol for underdogs and overcoming impossibilities.
But it was just the start. His triumph in defeating the Philistine’s champion launched him to be a great warrior. Success followed David in every war he was sent to. Israelites were so pleased with David that they would sing, “Saul slain his thousands, David his tens of thousands.” (1 Samuel 8:7)
The people’s cheers made Saul burn with jealousy. He drove David out and attempted to kill him multiple times. And yet, David honored God’s anointed and did not try to counterattack Saul.
King of Israel
Later, David became the King of Israel 20 years after receiving Samuel’s anointing. Throughout the years, God honed him and made him the greatest king of Israel in history.
But, David was still human; he made mistakes. And his sin of adultery with Bathsheba proved that he was not perfect. However, God is a merciful and forgiving God. David repented, and God forgave him.
David lived for 70 years and walked in the counsel of God. He worshipped God in his passion for music and introduced glorifying Him shamelessly.
