Toby Mac will be releasing his first album titled “Life After Death,” since the passing of his son, Truett.
Since his son passed away in 2019, the Grammy Award-winning artist Toby Mac never thought he could write the same songs again. He has been known for his upbeat Christian music, but after losing his son, his songs changed.
Days after the incident, he wrote “21 Years,” a song tribute to his late son. After another day, Toby and his daughter, Marlee, wrote “Everything About You,” a song about the life lived by Truett. The legendary artist wrote other solemn song “Faithfully” and “Promised Land,” that describes his mourning.
None of those songs are like what Toby usually produces, he thought he’ll be creating music this way forever. However, God called him out of his mourning to create new songs for Him.
“One day, I thought to myself, ‘I guess I will write songs from my sadness for the rest of my life. Sure, there’s no lack of faith in them, but I don’t think I’ll ever write another up-tempo song. It’s just not in me anymore,’” Toby Mac said in an interview shared with Christian Headlines. “And then I read a Scripture that caught my attention. I had never noticed it before, and it spoke directly to my heart. It said, ‘God is rolling up his sleeves.’”
“Life After Death”
Days after that, Toby began writing upbeat songs again just like he used to do. He wrote “Help Is On The Way,” a hopeful song about God’s faithfulness amidst tragedy. Months later, he wrote another song while in a restaurant. He scribbled on a napkin the words “You’re still the goodness in my life,” and he knew that has to be a song. That napkin scribble turned to the song “Goodness.”
Toby Mac’s upcoming album will be released on August 19. Despite the tragedy that he has been through, Toby knew that God didn’t leave him.
“In all my pain and grief, the unexpected began to emerge,” he said. “I didn’t think it was possible, and even though I will never be the same, it was undeniably a strand of joy. God didn’t leave. He remained. And I will forever be a different man. A saint is not someone who is good; a saint is someone who experiences the goodness of God. I know that goodness; I have tasted it. And though it will always be messy, I am now a believer in Life After Death.”
