Do you struggle with loneliness? In the craziness of today’s world we are more connected that ever, but many wrestle with the pain of loneliness. It’s time to leave loneliness in the dust, but how? We must look to the truth, found in the Word of God, to discover the freedom that is available as sons and daughters of the Most High.
God’s Word reveals His intention for you to be in relationship with Him and others. You were not designed to do life alone, but sadly many do. Below are five critical keys for leaving loneliness. You were created to belong! Now is the time to take your place in the body of Christ.
Critical Key #1 – God Is With You
Deuteronomy 31:5-6 NIV – “The Lord will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
You might have believed the lie that you are alone, but the truth is you have never been alone. Deuteronomy 31:6 promises that 1) the Lord is with you and 2) that He will never leave you. You are not alone. You have never been alone. The Great I AM has been with you your entire life. He was there at your conception, knitting you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139).
Activation – Have you been believing lies contrary to these promises? If so, get a peice of paper and write a lies of lies. Then bring them before the Father asking for forgiveness. Once you’ve repented before the Father throw the list away as a prophetic act that you will no longer believe them. Finally, declare Deuteronmy 31:6 (above in bold) for 30 days to renew your mind with truth.
Critical Key #2 – You Have Divine Help
Isaiah 41:8-10 NIV – “But you, Israel, my servant,Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend, I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. do not fear, for I Am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Have you been feeling lonely? Maybe you feel like there is no one to help you? It’s another lie! Isaiah 41 verse 10 holds another promise that crushes satan’s lie that you are all alone. Here the Father promises to strengthen you and help you. If someone is willing to help you (which He is!) then it is literally impossible to be alone. You have help!
Activation – Spend some time in prayer inviting the Holy Spirit into different areas of your life where you’ve felt alone and need help. Feel free to get really practical. For example, you might feel stuck in coming up for meal ideas for your family. Ask Him to help you!
Critical Key #3 – He’s Given You A Family
Psalm 68:1-6 NIV – “May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him. May you blow them away like smoke— as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God. But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. Sing to God, sing in praise of his name, extol him who rides on the clouds; rejoice before him—his name is the Lord. A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.”
The antidote to leaving loneliness is family. You were created to live in community with other believers. Sometimes it can be hard to find healthly community that is pursuing Jesus and loving one another well. Do not fret! Psalm 68 verse 6 is another promise you can take to the bank – God sets the lonely in families! He will actually help you find your tribe. They might not be blood, but there is family to be found in the body of Christ.
Activation – Pray and ask the Father for wisdom and insight for who to make your spiritual family. Be open to finding family in online and in-person communities.
Critical Key #4 – He Provides A Way To Out
1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NIV – “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
If you feel stuck and are looking for a way to leave loneliness, Jesus is that way! He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). He also knows the way into your promises, dreams, and calling. You don’t have to figure it out alone. He wants to help you find your way out!
Activation – Ask Jesus to show you the way out of a lonely situation or circumstance. Take time to listen for His answer. Journal His response. Once He’s given you a direction, ask Him for the first step towards moving that direction.
Critical Key #5 – He Can Heal Your Wounds
Psalm 147:3-5 NIV – “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.”
Many times the reason we feel lonely is because we’ve built walls around our hearts and our lives. We often build walls because we’ve been hurt…but you know what? When the wounds in our heart are healed there is no longer a need for walls. Jesus wants to heal your wound heart. You were designed to live with a walled up heart. After all, it’s really hard to connect with someone who has a keep out sign hanging on the front of their heart!
Activation – Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any wounds that are causing you to build walls. Invite Him in to those wounded parts of your heart to heal them. You will probably need to forgive those that caused the wounds too. Remember, that might include forgiving yourself or God.
