What Does It Mean To Say Jesus Is Lord?

Jesus is my Saviour and He is also my Lord. It is easy to understand that he is my Saviour but to make Him Lord is a continuous process. He is Lord but he needs to be acknowledged as Lord in all areas of my life. This is what it means to be filled in the Holy Spirit and to walk by the Spirit. One is to do with a position where He is my Saviour once and for all and the other is to do with a relationship. I am saved but I need to continue in this salvation by making Him Lord of my life. This is easily said than done. To make Jesus Lord of my life is to be dead to self and alive in Him. Jesus came to establish His Lordship over His church. He cannot be Lord where He is not acknowledged as one.

Government

The government shall be upon His shoulders means He is Lord over all. However in this world He can only govern those who acknowledge His as Lord. He cannot be in control of those who reject His Lordship. God is not in control of this world which is under the control of Satan. This is why we see so much corruption and disorder in this world. However His people who acknowledge Him as Lord are under His control and covering. The Israelites were under His covering and protected from the plagues the Egyptians suffered. We are in the world but not of this world. Our Kingdom is of another realm where Jesus reigns.

Revelation

This is a profound revelation that we can avail of all his promises in His Kingdom. His Kingdom is here and now. When His church realises this, we become the salt and light in this world. We are being prepared for rulership in the millennium now. This means that when we make Him Lord we become like Him on earth as He is in heaven. Jesus walked on earth as a man and set the standard for our walk. He did what he saw His Father doing. We are called to do the same. We can expect to walk in signs and wonders as we do so.

Welcome Jesus To Your Home Today

This is a confronting question but worth asking. How will things have to change if Jesus came home to stay? Will my daily routines have to change? Will my friendships have to change? Will my talk have to change? What about what I watch on television and online? Maybe we have to do an audit to see how much change we will have to make if Jesus moves in. However He lives in us. He is resident in our life through the Holy Spirit. Yet most of the time we are not aware of His presence or are we? Jesus said He had no place to lay His head down. Why was this so? People were happy to follow Him from a distance but when persecution came they all left Him.

Lordship

Has anything changed today? Are we happy to have Jesus to meet our needs but keep Him at a distance? Many call Him Lord but do we really understand what it means to say He is Lord? Our conscience has been so seared by the culture we live in that we don’t even know what sin is! We have accommodated to the culture we live in and nothing appears to upset us. We do things all in the name of tolerance and love. Is it loving to tolerate evil? Yet this is what we are doing in our churches. We have a good time and hear nice messages that keep us comfortable and warm. Jesus came to upset the status quo. He did not bring peace but division. So what was the peace He was talking about?

Audit

In this world we will face challenges that will confront us and we have to make a choice for good or evil. There is no compromise as compromise means we have given in to evil. We cannot compromise with sin. We cannot cover it with nice clothes and perfume. It is still sin. It is time for us to do an audit and ask ourselves the question. Will Jesus be comfortable to live with us or will He be left outside? I am challenged by this question and have to do a daily audit to stop doing things which I know I will not do or say if Jesus is in my home. Examining yourself is a good way to start the process of cleaning up my own home. His peace is real when we make Him Lord.

My Son Told Me He was Done Doing Chores

When he was about 7 years old, my oldest son decided he didn’t want to do his chores. I remember having a conversation with him about how we were all part of a family and everyone did things for each other so that all of the work around the house would get done. The theme of this as far as I was concerned was, “we all work together and help each other.” After having thought it over, he came back to me and told me, “I’ll do everything for myself, and then I won’t have to do anything for anyone else.”
Problem solved? Not in my book! I felt the need to expose him to a little reality. “So do you mean you’re going to earn money, shop for groceries, cook your own food and buy your own clothes? Okay, if you do that, you don’t have to do any chores.”
A resigned look came over his little face and he sighed. “I’ll just go do my chores now.”
Oh son, how much we’re like you sometimes in our spiritual life. We want the privileges of being part of the family of God, but none of the responsibilities. We want Jesus to be savior of our souls, but when it comes to giving him the position of being Lord of our lives; we don’t want to obey Him. We want to go our own way and do what we want to do when we want to do it, but is that the deal we signed up for?

Can we have one without the other?

The bible blows this little theory right out of the water. What does “Lord” mean after we’ve been saved? “For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.” 1 Peter 2:16. We are free from sin and from spiritual death, but we are obligated by our love of God to pray as Jesus did, “Not my will, but yours be done.”
In Luke 6:46-49 Jesus says, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord, ‘and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

A prayer about Lordship

Lord, please forgive me for using you as savior while at the same time denying you as Lord of my life. Lead me in the big things and the small things. Open my ears to hear your voice and open my eyes to see the tasks that you set before me. Not my will, but yours. Amen.
