Hope still shines despite the violence and horror the country Mozambique has been suffering. A new documentary, Nifento, featuring Heidi Baker and Iris Global shows how “love wins” amid crisis and tragedy.
Nifento
The film, which means love in the Mozambican language, is set to be released this coming November 2022. Missionaries James and Jessica Brewer took on the challenge to shoot the awe-inspiring story.
Their official website says that Nifento “showcases the grim reality of war and terrorism in northern Mozambique. It features stories from families who are experiencing it firsthand and the response of Iris Global, who is working hand in hand with the local church.”
Heidi shared, “Many of our friends have lost their homes. They’ve been burned down.”
Love wins
She continued, “Others have lost their lives, but we are empowered by love. And because we are empowered by love, we continue to go. We are going to continue to go. Low and slow. You can’t stop us because love wins.”
According to CBN News, Mozambique has been under attack by terrorists and extremists since October 2017. “And in these last week, the attacks have intensified in frequency and brutality. Each attack has involved killing and burning houses…Villagers are fleeing for their lives, carrying nothing with them, and have become refugees in the bush or on offshore islands.”
There also have reports of beheading civilians as young as 4 years old.
Heidi, who just celebrated her birthday yesterday, August 29, has been living in Mozambique for 25 years. Her friends and relatives have been concerned about their safety. They would convince her to leave, but she would only say, “Why should I leave behind the ones I’ve raised and disciplined; those I love? They can’t leave, so why should I?”
“Instead of being overwhelmed by a world filled with so much pain where extremists come, and war happens’ she said. “Instead of being overwhelmed by that, we’re empowered by the love of a God, who is love, to stop for the one in need.”
She added, “This is the greatest joy of our lives to be here for such a time as this.”
