The pandemic and the shutting down of mass gatherings can’t shut down the church because we are the Church.
Mark Varughese
In an episode of Standing Together with hosts Fergus Scarfe and Emma Abbott, Pastor Mark Varughese, founder and senior leader of Kingdomcity in Perth, Australia, shares a powerful message about the Church of God.
Pastor Mark grew up in a very strict religious home until he had an encounter with a loving God at the age of 12. He cultivated an intimate relationship with God. Soon, he was finally called to plant a church in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the age of 30. There he started the Kingdomcity.
“Here we are, 15/16 years down the track, pandemic aside, we’re in 30-40 countries, not counting the online campus. God somehow blessed us in a way that I definitely could not have imagined,” he shared.
Pandemic
He was then asked by Emma about the importance of gathering and being a member of a local church. That’s when he emphasized that the pandemic can’t shut down the church because we are the Church of God.
“Some people only define local church as a Sunday gathering and those people got shocked because when you shut down the gatherings, essentially it appeared like they shut down the church. But when you realized you don’t go to church, you are the Church, and the church is supposed to gather. Then it means that no shut down of the gathering can shutdown the Church because they can’t shut you down,” pastor Mark said.
Now, as more countries start to overcome the pandemic, he believes that the Church is coming out stronger than before.
“I think what’s now happening as we emerge out of the pandemic, is what’s coming out is actually a stronger Church.”
