Pastor Shares How Who You Marry Significantly Impacts Your Life & Generations

Pastor Mark Driscoll shard profound wisdom on how who you’re going to marry significantly impacts not just your life but also generations to come.

Divorce Rate

It’s easy to fall in love. Many quickly marry without counting the cost, without asking God for guidance, and end up regretting it. Perhaps it’s one of the main reasons why the divorce rate in America is high.

According to the Divorce report, “the divorce rate in America” reached 44.2% at the end of 2022.

That said, it is a very alarming issue that the body of Christ needs address. Pastor Mark Driscoll shared some wisdom that can help avoid such failures in marriage. He talked about the importance of choosing who to marry first and foremost.

The Second-Most Significant Decision Is Who You Marry

“The truth is when you marry someone, you’re making a decision for generations,” he remarked. “The most important decision anyone makes and the earlier you make the decision, the better off you are is number one, is Jesus Christ your Lord God and Savior?”

Then he stressed “the second most significant decision,” which is “who you will marry.”

Pastor Mark pointed out that who you choose to marry significantly impacts your life and the generations to come.

“They will determine what kind of household you live in,” he explained. “If you have children, what kind of family they will be brought in? If you’re going to have grandchildren and a legacy, you’re talking about one decision that can make generations of good or bad impact. Think about it right now. The family that you came from.. what was your parents’ marriage like? What was your grandparents’ marriage like? What was your great-grandparents’ marriage like?”

A great marriage can be passed on for generations. But a bad marriage can also have impact for generations!

As Pastor Mark shared, let God lead you in choosing a spouse.

Baseball Star Torii Hunter Marries Girlfriend The Next Day After Watching A Church Play

Baseball star Torii Hunter married his girlfriend the next day after he watched a church play about heaven and hell.

Torii was raised in the church by his Christian mother, but he never took sin seriously. He didn’t pay much attention to the reality of God’s justice and His hand of discipline. Growing up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, his childhood was difficult due to his Vietnam veteran father who had anger issues and drug addiction.

“I’ve seen my dad high. I saw him hallucinate. Crazy stuff. Little red men,” Torii recalls. “He has done tons of things, he stole my truck. He sold a truck. He’s done a lot of things.”

Their family lived in poverty. They would often go without food and electricity, because their parents were unable to pay the bill. But his Christian mom has always been the pillar of their household. It was also his older brother who encouraged him to reach his dream of becoming a professional baseball player.

Church Play

However, he got caught in the peer pressure of the world and got ensnared to sin. While he was playing in the Minors, he had sex with his high school girlfriend. Thankfully, God was able to rescue him from that sin when Torii got invited to a church play about Heaven and Hell.

Right after watching the play, he felt the conviction of the Holy Spirit. He immediately went out and asked his girlfriend to marry him. The following day, they made their relationship right in the Lord and got married. The couple, who lives in Prosper, Texas, now has four sons.

“I saw my life started to change,” Torii says. “I got rid of some people that were kind of holding me back.”

New Life

God also led him to his dream of making it to the Big Leagues. Torii played for the Minnesota Twins, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and the Detroit Tigers. He was also named a five-time All-Star, a nine consecutive Gold Glove Awards winner, and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner.

Today, Torii is helping other men break out from the snares of sins and find Christ. He has also been learning to become a godly man.

“The definition of a man is a responsibility, protector, provider,” he says. “I’ve talked to a lot of pastors. I’ve read a lot about what a man should do. Not a man from the world. Not a man from the streets. But a godly man.”

Does God Really Tell Us Who Our Spouse Is?

Does God tell us who we are to marry? Prominent Christian YouTuber, Joseph Solomon has cautioned his followers that are single to stop claiming that God has told them who their spouse is or will be.

Joseph, who has over 228,000 followers, tackles this sensitive topic concerning the dreams of single people, their future marriage aspirations and choice of spouse. He wants all his followers to “stop putting words in God’s mouth.”

“God didn’t tell you that that’s your husband/wife,” Joseph states in the introduction to the video below.

He emphasizes that it’s common for us to dream about people we spend the majority of our day thinking about. Dreaming about a person doesn’t mean that God is telling you to marry them.

“If all of my dreams came true, I’d have like five wives,” he jokingly says.

He does clarify that God can still use dreams to talk to us, but “the Bible doesn’t lead us to believe that’s the primary way we discern His will.”

The problems

Joseph also points out that you might not be the only one dreaming about that person.

“Have you ever thought that if someone is a generally desirable person, that you’re not the only one who feels the same way about God telling them to marry them?” he asks.

Believing that can also make a person feel bad about not marrying you because they desire to please God.

“So you’re telling them that they are disobeying God for not feeling the same way,” he says. This belief can also inflict pain to you.

“You can get upset with the person for not following God’s plan, or find yourself upset with God for Him not following through with something He never told you,” he said.

“God’s biggest plan for you is God”

So to avoid these problems about believing that God has told you to marry a specific person, focus on God’s desires for you. God’s ultimate plan for you isn’t about marriage but about working towards sanctification. His main goal for you is for you to become more like Jesus.

“And God has given us everything we need in His Word that pertains to life and godliness,” he added. “God’s biggest plan for you is God.”
