The World’s largest hospital ship is set to sail to Africa next year to provide free surgical and medical care for hundreds of thousands of people in need.
Medical Care
Over 16 million people die each year in Africa due to a lack of surgical and medical care. As COVID-19 became a worldwide crisis, the already strained healthcare systems of the poorer nations were challenged.
To help alleviate the healthcare problems of Africa, Mercy Ships are gearing up to provide free medical care to the nation. The international charity recently announced the construction of the world’s largest charity hospital ship, the Global Mercy.
Mercy Ships
Mercy Ships is the largest non-governmental charity hospital ships in the world. They provide humanitarian aid like free health care, health education, and mental health program to thousands in need.
Global Mercy is set to sail to Africa in late 2021. The 37,000-tonne ship will be providing free surgical and medical care to people in need. It houses six operating rooms, a 682-seat auditorium, student academy, gymnasium, pool, café, shop, and library.
Largest Hospital Ship
The 174-meters long ship will also provide training spaces that include simulation laboratories with virtual and augmented reality. These will teach locals health education that best suits the low-resource environments.
“The Global Mercy will be a true modern marvel— a fully custom-built hospital ship with customized instruments, state-of-the-art technology, and highly-trained talent of a modern hospital,” said Rosa Whitaker, President of Mercy Ships.
Global Mercy
The massive ships will be in need of 600 volunteers, including surgeons, teachers, electricians, and cooks, around the world.
“It also represents a unique call-to-action for anyone called to serve, and it presents the opportunity for people to use their skillset to positively impact global healthcare,” Rosa added.
