A baby from New York is being tagged as a “miracle” baby after overcoming COVID-19 and liver disease all before his first birthday.
In January 2020, Mitayah Donerlson gave birth to a bouncing baby boy and named him Kasen. The first days of Kasen’s life were far from easy, he was immediately placed in NICU due to some complications. He was diagnosed with a severe case of Jaundice and Respiratory Breathing complications.
After three days in the NICU, Kasen was cleared to go home, however, it was not the end of Mitayah’s worry. Mitayah noticed that her baby was showing concerning symptoms, she went back to his doctor to ask about the symptoms.
At the age of two months, Kasen was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia. It is a condition in infants wherein the bile ducts outside and inside the liver are scarred and blocked. The brave young boy underwent surgery where the doctors removed, created, and restructured his bile ducts.
However, in April 2020, Kasen’s family was informed that he needed a liver transplant as the surgery wasn’t successful. As Kasen was waiting for his liver donor, his situation became worse as he contracted the coronavirus.
Mitayah was losing hope for his baby, but Kasen keeps showing everyone what a fighter he is. The little angel overcame COVID-19 and survived through it!
“He always seems to wow his doctors,” said Mitayah. “He is a blessing and he is a miracle sent.”
Another miracle came knocking at the door of Kasen’s family. Mitayah received a call from Pittsburgh saying that Kasen had a liver donor.
After undergoing the liver transplant, the baby’s condition improved dramatically. His medical team are dubbing him as the miracle baby for what he has gone through even before he turned one.
“My heart was so overjoyed. That’s all I could do was cry and just say thank you, thank you, God, for giving this opportunity to my child,” his mom said.
Kasen has just recently turned one this month!
