An 8-year-old boy fought a mountain lion bare-handed after being bit by the lion on his head!
The attack
Pike Carlson, 8-years-old from Colorado, was paying with his big brother, Gage when he was attacked by a mountain lion. Upon seeing what happened, Gage ran inside their house to call their parents for help.
The mountain lion grabbed Pike by his head and dragged him under a tree. Pike, being a brave little warrior, tried to fight and scare-off the wild beast.
“I was just punching, trying to grab anything that I can, like a stick. I did find a stick and I tried to get it in the eye but soon the stick snapped,” Pike recalled.
Grabbed by the mountain lion
Ron, Pike’s dad, ran towards where his son is with a knife in his hand to attempt to scare the lion off. Seeing the lion chew on his son’s head gave him the courage to attack the beast without considering that it could kill him.
“His head was inside the lion’s mouth and I watched – and I think that’s what made me snap inside – watching it chew on him. That parental instinct to protect your child kind of kids in. It never even entered my head that I was about to tangle with something that could kill me. All you know is you have to do something. It doesn’t matter what happens to you, you’ve got to protect your children,” Ron told NBC.
The recovery
Pike suffered severe injuries to his head, and was immediately transported to a hospital in Denver where he had two surgeries.
“There was blood all over him. His scalp was ripped open in several spots. It was something that no parent should ever see,” Ron said.
Meanwhile, Colorado Parks and Wildlife was able to euthanize two mountain lions they saw nearby Carlson’s home. The two mountain lions fit the description of Pike’s attacker. and the DNA samples of the two mountain lions were then submitted for analysis.
Pike is now at home with his family away from danger. The courageous warrior is healing and recovering very well.
