Netanyahu: Arab Demonstrators Want To See End Of Israel As Jewish Nation State

The Arab demonstrators who raised Palestinian flags at Saturday night’s protest against the Nation State Law “want to annul Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people” Prime Minister Binjamin Netanyahu said at the weekly Cabinet meeting, Sunday.

“Yesterday, we received further evidence of incitement against the very existence of the State of Israel and why the Nation State Law is necessary,” Netanyahu continued. “We saw the PLO flag raised in the heart of Tel Aviv. We heard the cries: ‘In blood and fire, we will redeem Palestine.’ Many of the demonstrators want to annul the Law of Return [the legislation that grants Israeli citizenship to anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent or that is married to a Jewish person]; they want to annul the national anthem; they want to fold up our flag they want to annul Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people and turn it into what they call and Israeli-Palestinian state, or what others call a state of all its citizens.”

Netanyahu said that the demonstration showed exactly why the government had passed the law. “We need it to ensure the future of Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people. We passed this law and we will keep this law,” the prime minister said.

‘Your time is up!’ Livni Tells Netanyahu During Debate Over Nation-State Law

Newly appointed opposition leader MK Tzipi Livni of the Zionist Union delivered a scathing indictment of Israel’s government during an extraordinary session of the Knesset called to discuss the Nation-State Law during the parliament summer recess. In her first speech since taking over the position on August 1, Livni accused Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu of sowing distrust and destruction in Israeli society, blasting him for labeling any political opposition to him as treason, and vowing to defend Israel’s Declaration of Independence and the democratic values it embodies.

“It’s time to change the conversation from who is for or against your spins, to who is for or against the Declaration of Independence. There is one question the prime minister cannot answer: What the hell does he have against the Declaration of Independence?,” asked Livni. “70 years after the establishment of the Jewish State, Israel’s government is tearing up both the Declaration of Independence and Israeli society along with it We will not flinch, and we will not fear,” she added. “We don’t represent a minority…Today we declare that we will defend the Declaration of Independence, that we will be the dash connecting between Jewish and Democratic, and not the line that divides them.”

During Livni’s speech, about 30 demonstrators held up copies of the Declaration of Independence in protest against the Nation-State Law. The copies of the declaration were confiscated by Knesset security personnel and the demonstrators were forcibly removed.

“Today, we also declare one more thing,” Livni continued, “from here on, the rules of the game have changed. If you think that you can label anyone who disagrees with you as a traitor – that is over. We have no intention to bow our heads, to apologize or to flinch. We have a battle to fight, with our heads held high. Netanyahu, you have forgotten what it is to be a Jew, to love your neighbor, to love the stranger. You’ve turned into another populist politician who stands at the head of a populist party, and is spreading hatred of foreigners and minorities to serve his political needs.

“Our stance is that Israel is the Nation State of the Jewish people, which includes equality for all. I have a deep disagreement with those who do not accept Israel’s existence as a Jewish state, just as I have a deep and severe disagreement with the current government.”

Livni ended her speech with a call to Netanyahu not to wait until the Ultra-Orthodox parties topple his government in response to the looming Draft Law legislation, but to face the opposition in open elections sooner rather than later. “Citizens of Israel, let us step out of this swamp for a moment, and imagine a reality in which we replace all this arm twisting with dialogue. A dialogue that is conducted with respect to all parts of Israeli society. Netanyahu, why wait for the Draft Law? Let’s go to elections now. We promise to bring the principles of the Declaration of Independence back into our lives. That is our obligation, which we will fight for it until we win the elections. Your time is up.”

Netanyahu: Nation-state Law Necessary to Ensure Israel’s Jewish Future

The controversial Nation-State Law was necessary in order to guarantee Israel’s future as a Jewish country, but the measure does not detract from individual civil rights, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told the security cabinet Sunday (5 August).

Addressing Saturday nights Tel Aviv rally against the law, sponsored by the Druze community, Netanyahu stressed that individual rights in Israel were guaranteed in a variety of laws, beginning with the Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty. But he said that without the law it would be impossible to guarantee the country’s future as a Jewish state.

“No one has detracted, and nobody has any intention of detracting, from these personal rights. But without this law it would be impossible to ensure Israel’s future as a national home for the Jewish people,” Netanyahu said.

“The Nation-State Law serves to protect the Law of Return; it raises it to another level and of course grants the right to automatic citizenship to Jews, and only to Jews. The nation-state law prevents, for instance, people from taking advantage of the clause that allows for family reunification, via which tens of thousands of Palestinians have been absorbed in Israel since the Oslo accords were signed. This law will help prevent the continued unchecked entry of Palestinians into Israel. “The law could also help Israel block future entry of illegal immigrants.

“These, and other things are happening because the country’s laws only anchored in a basic law that deals with individual liberties, with no constitutional balance for our national element. So we passed the nation-state law in order to ensure that the country is not only democratic, but also continues to be the national home of the Jewish people. This is a critical need for our generation, and for future generations.”

The premier also addressed the Druze community directly, saying Israeli Jews and Druze share a special bond that will not be broken by the current legislation.

“Our deep connection with members of the Druze community and our commitment towards it are also critical. So we are creating today a special ministerial committee to give support to this connection and this commitment while at the same time recognising individuals of all faiths who serve in the IDF and the security forces,” Netanyahu said.
