Meet Nicole Hartstein, the bride who surprised her mother, a stroke survivor, by taking her wedding to the bedside of a nursing home!
The heart of the bride
Nicole’s mother, Jane, has been battling the effects of a stoke for over three years. Because of this, Nicole knew that her mother would not be able to come to her original wedding venue located in New Jersey, due to her physical condition.
However, Nicole so desired to have her mother present on her wedding day so she made a plan; since her mother couldn’t bring herself to the wedding, she decided to bring the wedding to her.
Together with her fiancée, Edward Guida they surprised Jane in the nursing home where she lives, on their wedding day!
“I just want Nicole to be happy, and I want her mom to be happy, too. We knew we wanted to do this,” Edward explained.
The mother of the bride
Seeing her daughter walking into her room wearing a white dress on her wedding day completely took Jane by suprise. In a room decorated with twinkling lights, glasses of champagne and a chuppah canopy ready for the ceremony, she expressed her heart:
“I can’t believe this,” Jane said. “I’m just so happy, I can’t believe they did this,” she added.
The staff at Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Long Island converted the family room unit into a wedding chapel.
After decorating with lights, tulle, and Mr and Mrs Signs, Jane made her entrance. She burst into tears—tears of joy, knowing that it was a miracle for her to be able to enjoy this day with her daughter.
As Nicole saw her mother shedding tears of joy, she wiped away her own tears away, too.
“I know you wanted to be at our wedding, so we’re bringing our wedding to you,” Nicole said while hugging her mom before walking down the aisle.
Walking down the “aisle”
As Nicole walked down the aisle, she was escorted by her uncle, James Jacob, to the song “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perry.
Nursing home staff, residents, and Nicole’s small family including her mother, the priest and rabbi all witnessed the wedding that day.
Going from Nicole Hartstein to Mrs Guida, a kiss was exchanged and congratulations were showered over the newlyweds.
Jane sat, watching the ceremony, and spoke of how she couldn’t believe what was happening right in front of her.
“This is the best gift anyone could ever have given me,” she said with tears in her eyes.
What an inspirational story of choosing family over anything else. The family unit is a powerful force and it is one that should be protected. Mr and Mrs Guida will surely be blessed for their heart and sacrifice on their special day.
