North Korean Man Fled Country, Only To Return To Feed The Hungry

A Christian North Korean fled his country to America, aiming for a better life. But he eventually returned to his hometown after responding to God’s call to feed the hungry.

Joon Bai’s family fled from their war-stricken hometown in North Korea. They traveled on foot and ventured to South Korea. After living in South Korea, Bai became an exchange student in America and earned his engineering degree. His hard work made him successful in business as he opened his factory in Pennsylvania.

One night while listening to the radio in his car, he heard the news of over 100,000 children dying of starvation in North Korea. He was so compelled by the information that he went home and told his wife about it.

His wife asked him how there are so many orphans in North Korea; he answered it was because of starvation. The parents would die from starvation, bringing the children to orphanages.

But the orphanages’ condition in the country was also dire. The facility could not provide clean water and milk. So, children would often die from diarrhea. And kids below one-year-old die from hunger because their bodies cannot cope with the solid food the orphanage can only offer.

Aid to North Korea

A friend advised Bai to send a palette of food to the North Korean government, which he did. North Korea responded with a letter of thanks, giving him access to return to the country so that he could offer help.

For five to six years, Bai has sent goods like corn, potatoes, hair clips, and washing machines to his born country.

“These kids, they break the bread in half and bring the rest home to their parents,” Bai recalled. “So, when I saw that, I thought, giving bread and rice and all that is not enough. I have to teach them how to grow the farm products.”

So, Bai started asking Chinese experts in farming to teach the North Koreans agriculture.

His efforts have resulted in an increase in food production for the country.

“It is in that process of being able and willing to help other people the faith grew. And I think God called me. It just happened very naturally,” he told Fox News. “My mind was full of passion to help those kids. Every second, my mind was focused on that.”

He added, “Today, I believe whatever I did is God’s will. He chose me to do certain things. That’s really what it’s all about. God’s faith in me gave me the courage to love other people. So, whatever is left of my life, I’m smiling.”

Christian Lady Travels 3,000 Miles To Worship God Freely

A Christian lady born in North Korea traveled 3,000 miles so she could freely worship and pray to God without having to risk for her life.

North Korea is among many countries where Christians are being persecuted. For that reason, many Christians in North Korea are leaving the country. However, leaving the country meant risking life and death because getting caught could mean facing punishment.

In 2011, Sookyung Kang, born in North Korea, got up the courage to escape. At 17-years-old, she desired freedom and wanted to be free to worship and pray to God. But the teenager hesitated because of her family. She had a choice to make – either to leave her family behind or remain in spiritual bondage.

“What should I do God? I want to be able to dream. I want to live the life I choose. But I don’t want to abandon my family. What should I do?” she recalled. “In the end, I chose my dreams and freedom.”

Free To Worship God

Today, Sookyung is free to worship God.

“Being able to worship and praise however I wanted in South Korea, I was so thankful for this freedom. My heart was full of gratitude,” she testified. “I don’t think I came to South Korea without a purpose.”

She also shared her plans to attend graduate school in the United States. She wants to help her nation.

“I’m getting ready for it,” she said. “That is my vision. Freedom is expressing your faith.”

Missionary Disciples Over 1,000 North Koreans Before Being Killed By Authorities

Rarely do we hear stories of North Koreans giving their life to Christ. For one, even mentioning the Christian God is an act of treason in their country. Thus, it is strictly forbidden. And two, North Koreans were taught that all missionaries are terrorists who will deceive and kill you. That’s why the story of the Chinese missionary, Pastor Han, leading over a thousand of North Koreans to Christ is amazing. His ministry tragically ended when assassins martyred him on April 30 of 2016.

According to the reports from Voice of the Martyrs, Pastor Han Chung-Ryeol and his wife were helping North Koreans ever since they arrived in the Chinese border town of Changbai in 1993. Pastor Han was sent to lead a small church of ethnic Korean Chinese in the area. North Koreans and Chinese are free to cross and re-cross the border. However, he and his wife never thought they would end up ministering to North Koreans. 

“It doesn’t matter if we wanted to do North Korean work or not. They just keep coming. When you see them you can’t get away from doing this ministry. When they come to China they are really starving; that is why they come. They don’t have clothes. When you meet them face to face there is no way you don’t want to do anything,” Mrs. Han said.

Sacrificial Love for North Koreans

Because of Mrs. Han’s compassion to North Koreans, she visited the country to provide rice for the orphans. Of which, she was arrested for acting suspiciously. After 72 days, she was released. But even that didn’t stop Pastor Han and his wife from helping people and sharing the Gospel with them.

After several years, Pastor Han had discipled over a thousand North Koreans near the border. One of them was Sang-chul.

“Pastor Han gave his life. But he gave hope to me and many other North Koreans,” Sang-chul recounted.

Sang-chul fled across the border to find food. He was hoping to make a living by selling mushrooms in Changbai yet he couldn’t because he didn’t speak Chinese.

“But in the mountains, I met a man. He said, ‘I can sell those for you.’ And he didn’t cheat me. He gave me all the money from the sell.” That was the first time he met Pastor Han.

Then he continued, “One day, I asked why he would do this, for he himself was in great danger for assisting a North Korean. ‘It’s because I am a Christian,’ he said. That made me afraid. Was he going to eat my liver?”

After some time, Pastor Han told Sang-chul, “God is real. There is hope for every person.”

“Nobody says that word. We know it is an act of treason. To speak the name of God can lead to soldiers coming in the night. There will be no trial,” he recalled.

Eventually, Pastor Han’s boldness to share Jesus bore fruit. Because Sang-chul himself was secretly leading people to Christ too, inside the borders of North Korea.

One day, they heard the news of North Korean authorities giving honor to assassins for killing a “terrorist-missionary” near the border of Changbai. Automatically, they knew that it was Pastor Han.

According to Mrs. Han, Pastor Han received a phone call at 1:30 in the afternoon. She didn’t know who her husband was talking to and he left alone. Around dinner time, she became worried for he was already late. Normally, he would already be at home during that time. So she called the police.

And by 7pm that evening, they found his body in his car. His heart was stabbed, his neck was slit and he had deep wounds on his head—a method commonly used by North Korean assassins.

Pastor Han died but the legacy he left to thousands of North Koreans continues.

Sang-chul spoked lovingly of the man who led him and so many others to Christ, “Despite the ever-present danger, many of us will continue to share the message that God is real. We hope that our sacrifice – when the day comes – will be worthwhile, just like it was for Pastor Han.”

Worship leader Sean Feucht says the recent US / North Korean summit was a significant moment where “prophecy was fulfilled.”

Donald Trump was the first sitting US President to step into North Korea on Sunday, June 30th. He and Kim Jong-un shook hands at the demilitarized zone. And the North Korean leader invited the US President to walk over the dividing line, making history.

Fox News reported that “Sean Feucht penned lyrics for his song Finish What You Started (Song for North Korea) in the exact same spot at the Korean Demilitarized Zone.”

The song was released in 2012 as part of an album called ‘Songs For Nations, calling for peace and hope.

Sean Feucht believes it is significant that Trump and Jong-un chose this strategic meeting place between North and South Korea as the site of their third pursuit at peace. The two leaders embraced before their 50-minute meeting and posed for photographs. Now they must finish what they started! The dearming of North Korea and an end to human rights violations especially against Persecuted Christians.

Light a Candle

Sean Feucht  is a Bethel Music worship leader and author whose songs your church may be singing. Sean’s nonprofit ministry Light a Candle goes to some of the darkest places on earth to worship. Fox News said, “He shared an image on Instagram with his 97,000 followers of his blue guitar case in the exact spot where Trump and Kim walked Sunday, the first time a sitting president walked into the Hermit Kingdom.”

From that location eight years ago Sean wrote the lyrics, “Oh my God you can do anything, Oh my God Nothing is too hard for you.” And he said, “I never imagined that song would come true.”

He continued saying, “Oftentimes we have no idea how God can use our simple songs and prayers to change history.”

Kim-Plosion! Trump and Kim Talks Implode Calling Us To Prayer as There is Still Hope

President Trump of the United States of America and Kim Jong-Un of North Korea had a historical second meeting this week in Vietnam. However, Trump ended the talks when North Korea demanded all sanctions to end.

President Trump said, “It was all about the sanctions. They wanted the sanctions lifted in there entirety and we couldn’t do that.”

He added, “Sometimes you have to walk and this was one of those times.”

Trump wants North Korea to completely denuclearize before lifting sanctions. The US wants North Korea to give up its secretive nuclear facilities and its missile and warhead programs. Kim Jong-Un was, “unprepared to do that.”

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he was hopeful that both the US and North Korea could resume talks soon. And South Korea said that the breakdown in talks are, “regrettable,” but that the US and North Korea have made, “more meaningful progress than at any time prior.”

God is Moving

God is moving even though talks seem to have imploded. A pastor in Korea had a dream saying that Jesus is working on Kim Jong-Un’s heart. Pastor Jerome prophesied saying, “I dreamt of Kim Jong Un, he had a dream. And he was waking up in the morning. And there was this voice saying, ‘Will you be remembered as the Korean who destroys North Korea. Or would you like to be remembered to be the Korean who unites North and South Korea?’ He made a choice, ‘I will be the Korean who will unite North and South Korea.”

After reading this article will you take a minute or two praying for God to change Kim Jong Un’s heart?

Prayer is Bringing Breakthrough to the Korean Peninsula

Revival to the Korean Peninsula?

Since the ending of the Korean War in 1953, many Christians have been praying for God to bring revival to the Korean Peninsula. The communist regime of North Korea has been closed off to any Western influence for years. Human rights groups and investigators have been preventing entrance into the country. There is reporting of extreme persecution of Christians. It’s been said that many North Koreans are living and working in concentration camps.

But now there is a thawing taking place. Intercessors and prayer warriors attribute what is taking place between North and South Korea as God answering prayer. There is breakthrough!

Pastor Jerome Ocampo told CBN News about events that took place in the South Korea Uprising Prayer Conference of 2016. Many church leaders from different nations gathered near the Demilitarized Zone to pray for North Korea. They were praying for the reunification of the Korean Peninsula. 

Pastor Jerome said that people should be praying for the reunification, liberation and freedom for North Korean believers. He and many of the other pastors saw the Singapore summit between US President Trump and Kim Jong Un on June 12 of this year as a miracle. 

Kim Jong Un’s Heart Changes in a Spiritual Dream

The pastor then shared a spiritual dream he said he had. He said, “I dreamt of Kim Jong Un, he had a dream. And he was waking up in the morning. And there was this voice that goes like this, ‘Will you be remembered as the Korean who destroys North Korea, or would you like to be remembered to be the Korean who unites North and South Korea?’ He made a choice, ‘I will be the Korean who will unite North and South Korea.”

People see the recent summit as God changing the heart of Kim Jong Un. Jerome was saying, “We cannot erase what he has done in the past. The whole history of the regime will always be there. But as a millennial, he is the most flexible in all the regime to bring change.”

Jerome continued saying, “And we’re gonna pray for change. God can bring that change. One day we will see one Korea. We will see one day Pyongyang will welcome believers and we will see God manifesting His glory again. Probably in a new way of revival all over Korea,” he said.

6 Things You Can Do To Help The Persecuted Church

Many Christians around the world suffer persecution because of their faith in the Lord Jesus. They are imprisoned, their properties destroyed, families torn apart, they are ostracized and more. But for those of us in a democratic country, it’s hard to imagine what that’s like.

According to Open Doors the top, ten countries most affected by this are North Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan, Eritrea, Libya, Iraq, Yemen and Iran.

But, is persecution in the Bible?

It should come as no surprise that the answer is yes. When we face hardships because of our faith we’re joining the many persecuted Christians in Biblical history. Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about Christians being persecuted?

“Indeed, all who delight in pursuing righteousness and are determined to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be hunted and persecuted [because of their faith].” ( 2 Timothy 3:12 AMP)

“If the world hates you [and it does], know that it has hated Me before it hated you.” ( John 15:18 AMP )

“Blessed [comforted by inner peace and God’s love] are those who are persecuted for doing that which is morally right, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever].” (Matthew 5:10)

“Blessed [morally courageous and spiritually alive with life-joy in God’s goodness] are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil things against you because of [your association with] Me. Be glad and exceedingly joyful, for your reward in heaven is great [absolutely inexhaustible]; for in this same way, they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” ( Matthew 5:11-12 AMP )

“But I say to you, love [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for] your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44 AMP)

“Blessed [morally courageous and spiritually alive with life-joy in God’s goodness] are you when people hate you, and exclude you [from their fellowship], and insult you, and scorn your name as evil because of[your association with] the Son of Man.” ( Luke 6:22 AMP )

“Do not be surprised, believers, if the world hates you.” ( 1 John 3:13 AMP )

6 Things You Can Do

So what can we do to help our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world? Firstly, there are organizations that keep watch on persecuted Christians such as Open Doors. They publish regular updates on situations around the world. Here are six things you can do to help:

  1. Pray
  2. Donate money to organizations such as Open Doors
  3. Volunteer
  4. Write to Persecuted Christians
  5. Advocate – Raise awareness and lobby the government to take action
  6. Encourage others to take action

But above all remember, if you’re facing persecution today you are not alone, we have a High Priest who intercedes for us and we too will be praying for you.

“Who is the one who condemns us? Christ Jesus is the One who died [to pay our penalty], and more than that, who was raised [from the dead], and who is at the right hand of God interceding [with the Father] for us.” ( Romans 8:34 AMP )

Captive Christians in North Korea Released & Testify to Miracles

From 2016 to 2017, Kim Hak Song, Kim Sang-duk, and Kim Dong-chul, three American citizens were arrested, separately, in North Korea. Dong-chul, a pastor in his 60’s, received the longest sentence of 10 years’ hard labor.

What were their crimes? “Espionage,” “crimes against the state,” and “suspicion of ‘hostile’ acts,” according to North Korea.

In the North Korea pre North Korea-United States Summit there was no hope of a fair trial or parole for these men. The government answered to no citizen and certainly no counsel of united nations. They were spies, anarchists, dangerous men. They were Christians.

Jump forward to May of 2018 and relations with North Korea have dramatically changed. President Trump made history by becoming the first sitting U.S. President to meet face-to-face with a North Korean leader.

The Trump administration convinced the North Korean government that things would be friendlier at the upcoming summit if they released the imprisoned men, and to the surprise of many, they agreed.

North Korea has a long history of being one of the most hostile countries to Christians. Simply reading the Bible or referencing prayer could subject you to brutal treatment and imprisonment. Stories of labor camps, public on-the-spot killings, and rounding up of entire families evokes images of WWII Nazi concentration camps.

But it seems the prayers of the underground Church and Christians worldwide are tearing down the strongholds.

President Trump tweeted: “I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting.”

It was a powerful moment to see Kim Hak Song, Kim Sang-duk, and Kim Dong-chul step back on American soil.

The men are said to be in good health as they return to family and loved ones.

Kim Hak Song, who had been accused of promoting religion, had this to say about his detainment, “I was thinking, I don’t know what I did wrong.” While he may not have been actively promoting Christianity, he certainly didn’t lose the opportunity to evangelize in prison. During his detainment an “official” asked him to write about Christianity. “I was grateful and thankful that at this time I was able to share God’s message to this person,” Hak Song said.

Hak Song, who by God’s protection was not brutalized, spoke also of dreams and visions he had while imprisoned. Unaware of any U.S.-North Korea summit, or intervention plan of President Trump, Kim Hak Song had dreams of being in Trump’s car with Americans cheering around him.

“The dream became reality. God is walking with us.”

The miraculous release of Kim Hak Song, Kim Sang-duk, and Kim Dong-chul is the modern-day re-telling of Paul and Silas in prison:

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.” – Acts 16:25-26

We at GOD TV rejoice with the Body of Christ for the release of Kim Hak Song, Kim Sang-duk, and Kim Dong-chul. May Christians continue to shake the foundations through our prayers and worship.

Trump-Kim Summit: World Will See Major Change

As the world’s news media evaluates the much-publicised Trump-Kim Summit, Christian leaders are hopeful this is a major step forward to peace in the region and the opening up of North Korea to the Gospel.

“The world is about to see a major change,” said Kim Jong-Un at the Summit in Singapore. Let’s hope the North Korean leader keeps his word and there is radical change for good – that not only delivers denuclearisation, but an end to human rights abuse, especially against Christians.

“And this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations,”  Matthew 24:14 declares.

Nothing can stand in the way of this being accomplished, no brutal regime or political dynasty or false gods. And, God can even use an imperfect American president to start the ball rolling!

Certainly, in this historic summit that many thought would never happen, President Trump has achieved what no other US president has done, met with the leader of North Korea, an enemy of the USA since the Korean War of 1950-53.

However, CBN observes that he has followed in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan. “On June 12, 1987 at the Brandenburg Gate, President Reagan told Mikhail Gorbachev: ‘If you seek peace, if you seek prosperity… if you seek liberalization… tear down this wall!’ Today, exactly 31 years later, President Trump picks up the baton!”

Trump-Kim Summit: history in the making

 

“History is made in Singapore with a handshake that signifies a promise to build lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and a new relationship between the USA and North Korea,” the BBC reports.

CNN is less positive, minimising what has been accomplished and pointing out all the limitations… questioning whether the agreement to denuclearise is verifiable or irreversible and observing that no time table has been set.

However the two leaders did sign a four point plan that aims to see the process of denuclearisation soon begin:

  1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
  2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
  3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
  4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

We need to continue to pray

“Thank you for praying. It seems the Trump-Kim Summit went very well,” says Franklin Graham. “This is just the beginning of a new chapter between NK and the USA. My continued prayer is that God will give wisdom to both leaders. I’m thankful we have a President  who was willing to take the risk.”

While OpenDoors, a ministry that stands up for the Persecuted Church is positive, they remain cautious, quoting North Korean defector, Hea Woo: “We should be careful not to be deceived… I know how horrible the Kim leaders are… But it is possible that God transforms people through His power. Let’s pray that if North Korea has any dark plans, that they will be revealed.” 

During a press conference, President Trump said he had addressed human rights violations with Kim Yun-Un. He also spoke of Otto Warmbier, the American student who was returned to the US by North Korea in a coma and died from brain-damage.

“Without Otto Warmbier this summit would not have happened. He did not die in vain, let his parents know peace will come in his name,” said the President.

He also spoke about ending the USA’s ‘war games’ against North Korea and how he hoped for the day when the USA could recall its 32,000 soldiers stationed in South Korea. In due course international observers will visit North Korea. In the meantime sanctions remain in place.

“The Korean War never ended to this day, but now we can all have hope that it will end soon, and it will,” President Trump said. “The past does not have to define the future. A bright future is within reach if North Korea gives up nuclear weapons.”

Hope for Peace Arises as Leaders of North and South Korea meet

An all out war in the Korean Peninsula has been touch and go these past months, but thankfully it looks like peace is a very real possibility. There may be many reasons for this, however we can be sure of one thing: God has heard the prayers of millions of Koreans praying for their region, as have Christians worldwide. And, in what many may see as an unlikely turn of events, it seems US President Donald Trump’s ‘peace with strength’ initiative may have helped turn the situation around.

It wasn’t long ago that North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un was testing missiles in the South China Sea, creating a global crisis. Japan voiced grave concerns over its safety as did the US territory of Guam which North Korea threatened to “wipe it out”. Insults were traded between President Trump and Kim Jong Un – the words ‘dotard’ and ‘rocket man’ spring to mind. We can smile about this now, but for a season it looked like full-scale war was unavoidable.

It’s seems America’s firm stand against North Korea and President Trumps refusal to back down has proved to be successful. Donald Trump threatened Kim Jong Un, time and time again, stetting that “all options are on the table” including military intervention.  The US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley also deserves credit for speaking forthrightly at the UN. “If war comes, the North Korean regime will be utterly destroyed,” she warned. “The US will never accept a nuclear North Korea.”

Fast foward to the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang and North Korea decided to send a delegation at the last minute. This appeared to be the start in a thaw in hostility and just last week Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in had a historic meeting on the border between the two nations. The result was the signing of the “Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula.”

This now lays the foundation for talks between the USA and North Korea on a wider peace accord.

This is a miracle. Looking at the picture of the two men above, one wouldn’t think there ever was a problem between North and South Korea. But that would be the furtherest thing from the truth. The horrors of the Korean War are well documented and the news media is full of reports of the huge challenges that still lie ahead, but there is hope. It seems North Korea is ready to emerge from international isolation and that there is a brighter future for Asia.

What the world’s media will not tell you is that Christians both in and outside of Korea have been praying for this breakthrough for many years and we cannot underestimate the power of prayer to turn even the most impossible situations around.

Koreans are praying for North Korea

Did you know that the world’s largest church is found in South Korea? An Assemblies of God affiliate, Yoido Full Gospel Church has some 480-million members and one of their key missions to pray for North Korea. It was founded by David Yonggi Cho in 1958 and is now led by Young Hoon Lee. Many of its members have been separated from their friends and family in the north and their dream is for them to be reunited.

The church hosts overnight prayer meetings in it massive auditorium each Friday and furthermore it has a mass prayer site just miles away from the North Korean border. Known as the Osanri Prayer Mountain, thousands gather there to pray throughout the day. The facility can accommodate 20,000 people and the prayers of God’s people can be heard petitioning Heaven. Their prayers have not gone unheard.

Christians worldwide are praying for North Korea

Many Christian missions organisations throughout the globe have led passionate prayer initiatives for North Korea. There include our friends at the Barnabas Fund, who reach out to the Persecuted Church, and they have been interceding for North Korea for Years.

“North Korea is consistently ranked as the most dangerous country in the world to be a Christian,” they have revealed, giving a bleak overview of the situation facing our brothers and sisters in this nation.
