The 19-month-old son of one of the two firefighters that lost their lives in the Australian bushfires received a Medal of Honor for his father’s bravery.

NSW firefighters Geoffrey Keaton and Andrew O’Dwyer were killed while fighting the bushfires on December 19, 2019. A falling tree hit their car that caused it to overturn. As a result, both men were killed.
Geoffrey’s son Harvey received the posthumous Medal of Honor during his father’s the funeral. Harvey dressed as a firefighter, just like his dad. New South Wales Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons pinned the medal to the young boy’s chest. Geoffrey Keaton was awarded the posthumous Commendation for Bravery and Service.

NSW Rural Fire Service posted the heart wrenching photos of Geoffrey’s funeral on their Facebook page. Many commended both firefighters for their bravery and their sacrifice and paying tribute to their heroic efforts.

The Australian bushfires are one of the worst that have happened in the world. The fires have reached a vast majority of the continent. Twenty-five people and over one billion wildlife have perished in the raging fires.
Amidst great tragedy, the world is coming together to help one another. Thousands have volunteered to fight fires and thousands are helping the firefighters and those who have lost homes. Australia has been receiving aid and donations from around the world.
The unity that has come from this tragedy reminds us that there’s still hope even in our darkest days. Most importantly, let’s join together as the global Church and continue pray for Australia!
