Pastor Steven Furtick challenged Bishop TD Jakes in a powerful segment where he gets to make a one-minute sermon from a Hamilton song title. The results were both witty and powerful.
Bishop TD Jakes
Steven Furtick, founder and lead pastor of Elevation Church, welcomed Bishop TD Jakes in the congregation to talk about his recent book, “Crushing: God Turns Pressure Into Power”.
But before they could dive more about the book, Furtick invited Jakes to a “game” to prove that Jakes “can preach on anything.” He would give a sing title from the recent musical they watched together, Hamilton. And then, Jakes would give a one-minute sermon about the title and with a text.
The audience cheered on as the Bishop helplessly surrendered to the impromptu challenge.
“Hamilton” challenge
Furtick gave the first song title, “My shot”. After just a second of thought, Jakes referred “My shot” to the young prophet who Elisha commissioned to shoot the arrow found in 2 Kings 13. He continued, “Depending upon how far he shoots it determines well what he could have had.”
“The power of the text exists in the reality that God does not make the shot for us. But He gives us all of the ingredients that are necessary to be successful.”
People stood up in applause for Jakes’ quick and epic sermon.
The next song title given was “The Room Where It Happens”. Jakes shared about Thomas’ missed opportunity of knowing Jesus’ resurrection in John 20 when Jesus first appeared to his disciples. He added, “Now, he comes into the room having missed the initial inaugural moment that Christ reappears to His disciples. The power of being in the room will determine the destiny of his ministry and his life.” He pointed out that what caused Thomas to believe because he was in the room with Jesus.
I can still get back up again
Moreover, he shared another sermon from the same song title. “Or we could go into the room where they are mourning over the corpse of a 12-year-old dead girl,” he added.

“And all of a sudden Jesus puts them all out of the room until nobody’s in the room but her and Jesus. He raises her up from the dead because He has gone into the room with her.”
He concluded, “Because she was in the room with the right Person, she got back up again. So my conclusion is if everybody forsakes me and everybody leaves my room, as long as Jesus is still in the room, I can still get back up again.”
