God Is Dealing With The Wrong Ways Of Spirituality

During this season, God is dealing with our wrong ways of spirituality and defective worship for Him.

God’s Plan Supersedes

In an episode of The Cry with host Betty King, Pastor Preethy Kurian of Capstone Church reveals that during this season, God is dealing with our defective hearts for Him. She started her message by sharing how God preserved her life when she contracted the coronavirus last year.

“It doesn’t matter what the enemy plans,” Preethy said about her experience. “When God has got a destiny, God’s plans supersede any plans of the enemy.”

She then shared how she thinks that these changes that are happening right now is an opportunity for us to also change. This season might be the best time to evaluate our faith and our stand in His Kingdom.

“When things are changing, we need to change. It’s a good time to have a look at where we are, what we’re doing, and how to move really in the move of God.”

Wrong ways of spirituality

Are we really serving God through our ministries or are we doing it for our own benefits? The senior pastor of Capstone Church then revealed that she thinks that God is dealing with our hearts, our worship, and spirituality right now.

“God is, I believe, challenging us. And this season, I feel God is dealing with the defective heart, the defective worship. God is dealing with the wrong ways of spirituality. I really feel that God wants us to come back,” she said.

We can’t determine for ourselves what is right, good, and Godly, only God can decide that. All we have to do is to lean into Him for us to know His heart. When we get to really know His heart, then we can determine what is good and what is evil.

“Do not call the wicked things righteous, do not call the things that are not of God Godly. I believe God is challenging this, that which is good is good, but God defines what is good… We have to see what God is calling good and that stands a test of time.”

What does ‘Being myself’ look like?

“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken!” You may have heard this cleaver, quotable quote. The reality is God wants us to walk in the fulness of who we are and each of us is uniquely made with our own individual destiny and purpose. He doesn’t want you to be a carbon copy, but your own person.

Do you struggle to be yourself? Have you perhaps moved here from one country to another and are finding cultural differences a struggle? Let’s Get Real this week deals with issues of identity and displacement.

Sue Eldrige and Preethy Kurian host this week’s episode which examines what it means to be yourself’ and especially in a new cultural setting. They’re joined by Chris Larkin, Alison Wilson and guest Lynn Swart of New Day United.

Perhaps the Lord has called you as a missionary? The UK was once known for sending out missionaries all over the world. Interestingly people from all over the world are now being called to the UK as missionaries!

I personally know what it’s like to come from another country and culture and have to learn to navigate new language and traditions. Being myself hasn’t always been easy and I feel I can sometimes be misunderstood. Preethy shares what the freedom to ‘be yourself’ means to her.

She and her husband came to England as missionaries and set up a church in East London. Born in Hindu India, raised in Muslim Saudi Arabia, Preethy talks about not being able to be herself because of the ingrained oppression of women in Saudi Arabia and the need to have her husband’s permission to do many things. Also, living in England, she finds her accent isn’t always understood and certain words have different meanings to the ones she’s used to.

Being myself – What does it mean?

What does it mean to be yourself? Watch the video above and see. Be free to be yourself and don’t and don’t be held back.

Alison recognises that when we accept limitations they affect our freedom. For example we may say, “I can’t speak because… or God can’t use me because…” Don’t be held back.

“We don’t have to use different entrances and we don’t have to cover ourselves from head to toe.” That’s not freedom.

Guest Lynn Swart of New Day United says challenges come when we aren’t true to who we are, when we try to be someone else. Lynn is the Executive Director of New Day United a charitable organization working with the poorest of the poor in South Africa.

How Should Christians Act in the Workplace?

In this episode of Let’s Get Real the panel discuss faith at work, sharing what it means to be a woman of God in the workplace. Irene Nlandu talks about being single and godly and Krish Kandiah on the ‘strangeness’ of God.

Join Sue Eldridge, Alison Wilson, Chris Larkin, and Preethy Kurian on Let’s Get Real, episode 2 and be inspired. Preethy starts things off by recognizing the value of Christians working in secular environments. “Church is not restricted to two hours on Sunday,” she says. “We are the Church, we are the Kingdom of God that goes into different places. We’re called to the workplace, I think its very important for Christians to be in the workplace and share their faith at work.”

It’s true, we sometimes think that our Christian persona is restricted in full expression to a church setting but that’s not how Jesus operated, He was Himself everywhere He went impacting the world with Kingdom values. So as born-again Spirit-filled Christians what stops us from doing the same? Let’s not be shy to share our faith at work.

Faith at work – can we be ourselves?

Alison feels we ought to be free to be ourselves in our places of work but recognizes that we need to adapt to the setting. Chris answers by adding, “Sadly we’re not often free to be ourselves; there’s a lot we can’t say and do, I had to learn I’m in a different Kingdom at work and accept that Jesus said we’re in the world but not of it”.

It’s all about respecting your workplace rules and regulations, yet carrying the Kingdom with you to be the salt and the light. I like what Preethy says “We’re called to impact culture and every sphere”. But it’s knowing how to do that and not come across as all preachy and religious.

The panel agrees it’s not good to just shove religion down peoples throats. And Sue brings up a valid point, “If we don’t get out into the world if we don’t take us, filled with Jesus and filled with his love into the world then we’re just gonna be up on a hill watching it die –full-time ministry is your life”

Not everyone is called to be a church leader but all of us are called to “go into the world and make disciples”. This can come in a variety of ways and Alison relays a story of how the Holy Spirit gives her insight into people’s underlying issues which has led her to lead them to Christ.

“I worked as I lived, I was the same in my work situation as I was at home, as I was at church”.

Sue emphasizes the need for us to be the same person whether we are at home, at church, or in our workplace,” I worked as I lived, I was the same in my work situation as I was at home, as I was at church”.As born-again Spirit-filled Christians, we carry the Lord with us wherever we go.

This includes taking into account our culture and that of others. Guest Irene Nlandu of Eastgate Church joins the panel and shares some of the difficulties in overcoming cultural boundaries and being real about how she was feeling. “I try being me and being the best version of myself and I believe that this creates a space for people to just be themselves”

Being ourselves, keeping it real can be a challenge especially when you’re from another country and you’re in a new job but keeping lines of communication open is key as Irene found.

Guest, Dr. Krish Kandiah joins the ladies and talks about the importance of missiology. What does it mean to read between the lines and see God in the stranger on the street or in our work colleague? In Krish’s book, God is Stranger – What happens when God shows up he explores reading the awkward parts of scripture to see where God is and draws parallels with the way we treat strangers. “If we begin to see other people wherever they’re from, whatever their background as an opportunity to serve God – just being in the office – there are opportunities to show hospitality. And hospitality is at the heart of God!
