Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the president of the Ukraine who is at war with Russia today. He rose to fame as he bravely joined the military, leading the country to face its giant enemy.

President Zelenskyy, 44, had no political experience when he ran for office in Ukraine’s March 2019 presidential elections. He initially studied law but later chose to be an actor and a comedian. Ironically, his best-known role is when he played a teacher-accidentally-turned-president of the TV series Servant of the People. He also entered a Ukrainian version of Dancing with the Stars, winning its first season.
He is married to Olena Volodymyrivna Zelenska, an architect and screenwriter, and the couple is blessed with two children.

Ukraine’s Jewish President
But only a few know of this young and charismatic leader’s Jewish background. He was born to Jewish parents in Eastern Ukraine. But, his Jewish identity barely surfaced as an issue throughout his career.
Tatiana Tsyba, former media and public communications advisor and Zelenskyy’s childhood friend, said that Zelenskyy did not mention his Jewishness growing up. “It never mattered … There were a lot of Jewish people around, yet there was no particular interest in who was who. Neither were there any bad feelings towards Jews,” she said.
In The Times of Israel interview, the popular president said, “[We were] an ordinary Soviet Jewish family. Most Jewish families in the Soviet Union were not religious.”
He added that several of his relatives were victims of the Holocaust. In a meeting with former Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Zelenskyy shared his familial history. “Three of them, their parents, and their families became victims of the Holocaust. All of them were shot by German occupiers who invaded Ukraine.”
“The fourth brother survived,” he continued. “Two years after the war, he had a son, and in 31 years, he had a grandson. In 40 more years, that grandson became president, and he is standing before you today, Mr. Prime Minister.”
Today, Ukraine’s brave president stood steadfast to his word. He told his fellow countrymen, “I will never let you down.” Indeed, he stayed in the capital despite knowing that Russia named him as their primary target.
Let us all continue to pray for peace and wisdom to the countries involved.
