What can the story of the prodigal son teach us?

Prodigal Son

Joyce Meyer cited an important message the Story of the Prodigal Son. It teaches us how a spiritually immature Christian and spiritually mature Christian approaches God. In the story, the man’s prodigal son suddenly asked him for his inheritance though his father is still living.

“In that culture, a child never ever talked to a parent about money or their inheritance,” Joyce said. “It was totally out of the question, it was something you did not do. So, to even mention that to his father was like the rudest thing that he can do.”

Only Jesus Can Satisfy

When he got the money from his father, he wasted it on worldly things and ended up with nothing. After living a wasteful life, he ended up eating what the hogs eat just to fill up his empty stomach. But it never satisfied his hunger.

“A life of sin will never satisfy your hunger. You can leave home and run away from the Father’s house thinking that the world has what you want… I’ll tell you what, you can go get it but it’s still going to leave you empty. Because there’s nothing the world has that can satisfy the spiritual hunger that we have on the inside of us. Only God can fill that place up, nothing else.”

Spiritually Mature Sons

After some time, the prodigal son came to his senses and returned back home where his father was waiting for him. He begged his father to make him what he wanted him to be. Instead of shoving him away after what he did, his loving father forgave him and welcomed him back to his house.

This story teaches us that immature Christians approach God by just asking what they think they wanted. But mature Christians submit to their father’s will.

“Immature baby Christians, ‘Give me, give me, give me, give me.’ Spiritually mature sons and daughters, ‘Make me what You want me to be.’”

Return To Your First Love

Nothing can separate you (anyone in Christ) from the love of Christ except you. Though the enemy will try so hard, it is written,

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35-39)

While we were yet sinners, Jesus died for us so we can be reconciled to God and have life in abundance, and we love Him because He first loved us. God gave us His only begotten Son. He is able and always willing to bless us according to His will and to His glory (see Romans 8:32, John 3:16, 1 John 4:19, Romans 5:8).

The Lost Son

The prodigal lost son (see Luke 15:11-24) asked his father to give him his portion of his father’s property because his eyes were in the world. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:15)

So he left with the portion the father gave him. He thought that would not run out, but it is only the father’s love that cannot be exhausted. When he had finished all he had and had nothing to feed on, he began to feed on pods that pigs were eating.

Love of the Father

The situation became unbearable for him. He finally came back to his senses and said to himself, “I will arise and go to my Father, and will say to Him, Father, I had sinned against heaven and before You.” The lost son didn’t let his heart condemn him to the extent that he could not return to his Father, his first love (see 1 John 3:20-21). Proverbs 28:13 says, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” (see 1 John 1:9).

The father had already forgiven him the moment the son repented in his heart – and even before he confessed it because the father had seen his heart (see Isaiah 65:24). The father received him with compassion from afar. It is the father’s will that the lost should return to Him, our first love. Instead of condemnation, the father put the best robe on him, the ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. The father welcomed him and received him as a son dearly loved, and prepared the fatted calf to celebrate his return.

Jesus is Calling

No matter what you have done wrong or whatever has taken you away from the Father, Jesus is calling you back into His warm and loving arms. His love never has and never will wax cold. Proverbs 8:35-36 says, “For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.”

Jesus is our first love and is reaching out to you to return to your first love. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul” (Mark 8:36-37).

Jesus’ Love For You

“Lord Jesus, I am a sinner, please forgive me of my sins. I believe You are the Son of God, You died for my sin, and God raised You from the dead. I accept You as my Lord and Savior, please come into my life, in Jesus name.”

What Does A Modern Day Prodigal Son Look like?

There’s always a point in our life where we feel numb or bored and we just try to get by, trying to survive each day. Everything that we do seems irrelevant and there’s nothing we are passionate about anymore. That’s why we try to fill the void with temporary things, to awaken our emotions and let loose.

The parable of the prodigal son has always been a great parable that teaches us a lot of things, and all of us can relate to it. The son, already blessed as he is, longs for something more. He lost his sense of purpose and looked for something that can awaken his emotions and fill the empty void he had been experiencing. Then he runs away to the world, believing that something out there can satisfy him.

The truth is, we are like the prodigal son. We stray away from the presence of God when we grow weary in our faith and when we’re being pulled by the world to embrace its destructive ways. We lose sight of the Father because we’ve been full of ourselves. We lose sight of what’s eternal and settle for temporary things. We lose sight of who we really are.

Thankfully, God is a sovereign God. His pursuit is greater than our ability to wander. He pursues us relentlessly and endlessly, forgiving us as if nothing happened. He embraces us as if we’re not flawed and untidy, and sees our worth when we deem ourselves worthless.

If you’re feeling like you’ve gone too far from God and you’re feeling that you’re 100,000 steps away from home, just take one step back and God will do the 99,999 more to run to you.

Maybe there’s a loved one that ran away from your home and you feel like there’s no way they’re coming back. Just hold on and wait like the Father did. He is always able to restore what is lost.
