Little Casey Hathaway, all of 3 years old has THE story of a lifetime. He was lost in the woods of North Carolina for 3 days; a parent’s worst nightmare. When he was found he was cold, but doing well – and obviously above ALL else, alive.
THE best part of this story is HIS version. I have small grandchildren in that age group and they tell it like it is. If they tell me they saw an angel, they most likely saw an angel. Casey not only saw an angel but it came in the form of the biggest bear hug you could imagine. NEWSFLASH – It WAS a bear! Whether an angelic bear or a wild bear with a mama’s heart, this bear is the reason Casey is doing just fine. He said he hung out with a bear for 2 days. Oh.My.Goodness. The woods where he was found was full of sinkholes and they found him “stuck in a tangle and thorns”, which makes me wonder if that ole’ bear tangled him up to keep him from wandering off to an untimely death. He was only 3 after all.
Never mind there was a Disney movie about a boy raised in the woods by wolves, which was not a true story. How about a Disney movie about a boy protected for 3 days in the woods by a bear that IS a true story. (“Look for the BEAR necessities, the simple BEAR necessities; Forget about your worries and your strife…” ~ remix of Bare Necessities.)
In a week where bad news has governed the airwaves and many of us have cried so hard we gave ourselves headaches (especially if you live in New York…), we needed THIS story for so many reasons. We have been reminded that there are still miracles in the 21st century. This story has made our hearts swell with joy to hear of a real happily ever after. Our faith is increased by the sheer wonder of this amazing ending to what could have been a tragedy.
God really went above and beyond to use a BEAR to be the untimely hero in this modern day story. Really, a bear. Daniel in the lion’s den; Casey in the bear’s den? Both lived to tell about it. News story for the ages! Don’t underestimate the God of wonders and miracles. Job 5:9 says, “He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.”
Faith is mostly about just “going with it”.
It’s about letting life surprise you with the unexpected and unexplained, and not trying to squelch it or undermine it. A miracle is just that – a miracle, which is defined as: “A surprising and welcome event that is NOT explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore to be the work of a divine agency.” BAM.
Life is jam pack full of “bear-y” special moments that will require the faith of a child in order not to miss it. In your logical thought process of lining up all the ducks in a row, leave a blank space for the unexplained; for the miraculous. It is clearly NO wonder God tells us in His word to have the faith of a little child. Just ask Casey. He got the world’s BEST bear hug!
