Who is God looking for in this hour? The rich? The self-sufficient? Those with no need? No. He is looking for contrite and broken people. He is searching the earth for those who are broken and desperate for help and hope. Contrite means a desire for atonement and a realization of needing the very resurrection of our hearts back to God. “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) Basically, we need to see, and then acknowledge our desperate need to be saved. We need to recognize the great love of our God.
Broken: Earth’s Current Condition
All I can picture is the valley of dry bones. That seems to be a visual of the spiritual condition of planet earth. That’s about as grim, broken, and hopeless as anything I can imagine. Pretty much all of us have some amount of fear of the unknown, which isn’t an indicator of weak faith. The world changed in a day. It caught our entire planet off guard. In a lot of ways, it broke us all. It takes the sum total of every day of our individual journeys to show us who we really are, what anchors us, and what real faith is all about.
Them Dry Bones
Broken bones are really the best visual of hopelessness. Bones have no life. Bones are the final remains of each of us – BUT they are shatterproof and no doubt they purposely speak of resurrection in the Jewish tradition. “O ye dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord. Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you and you shall live.” (Ezekiel 37:5) God breathes LIFE into broken and contrite hearts. One at a time. Yes, He is calling us each by name alone, yet calling us collectively as ONE. His heart is to all of humanity at this hour.
Oh, what a promise for every seemingly hopeless, lifeless situation we may find ourselves in! Oh, what a promise for every seemingly hopeless, lifeless soul we stand in the gap for. “They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ Therefore prophesy and say to them: This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.” (Ezekiel 37:11,12)
God Is Looking For You
God is looking for hearts that are looking for HIM. Hope is HERE! Come with whatever measure of faith you have, even if it’s the size of a mustard seed. You do realize how small that is, right? It’s only 1 to 2 millimeters. Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain – MOVE from here to there and it WILL move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20)
Brokenness can actually take us to places of beauty. We see what we are truly made of – who we truly are – we see the good parts rise up – we get to conquer giants we never thought we could take down – we get to see our crippled parts get us from point A to point Z no matter how long it took – we get to see our boats still floating on top of the storm surges – we get to witness finding missing pieces and seeing them fit back together! We have a front-row seat to seeing God show up on our behalf!
God is waiting for you. Come as you are. We are safe in our heavenly Father’s care, and all the love you could ever hope for is ready to welcome you home.
