Tough industry
Jessica’s passion for singing landed her a record contract at the age of 16, but the music industry ended up being pretty tough for a teenager. For example, at the onset her manager told her she needed to lose weight.
“I have to go on a crash diet quickly, I took diet pills,” Jessica opened up in the interview. “I didn’t know what I was doing, I didn’t know how much I was taking and it ended up something that I did for 20 years.”
When she was 22, Jessica married Nick Lachey, but just three years later, they ended their marriage. Both moved on and Jessica married Eric Johnson in 2014. They’ve had three children together and are happily married. But before she realized it she was battling the giant of alcoholism.
Fans noticed and her family started being affected by her alcohol abuse but she didn’t know how to stop.
“I didn’t show up for my family. I took the picture and I made the world think that I showed up,” Jessica remembered.
Surrender
In the end, God used her family to help empower her to turn from her ways and end her addiction to alcohol. She also sought help from a therapist.
“I just realized that I had to surrender,” she added.
Today, Jessica is publishing her book “Open Book” that reveals about her journey and her faith in God.
Before ending her interview with Today, Jessica sang her beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace” as a testimoniy to how much that song means to her.
“It’s about walking through fear and it being okay to be afraid. And the other side of fear is what’s so beautiful,” Jessica said.
