Eighteen South Carolina inmates get baptized inside the prison walls of the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center.
South Carolina Inmates Get Baptized
On October 6, eighteen inmates gave their lives to Christ as they were baptized with the guidance and supervision of local ministers. Darlington County Sheriff’s office took to Facebook to announce the memorable moment.
“The support from the ministers and other leaders right here in our own community is strong. A group of Veterans, led by Rep. Robert Williams, come into mentor the men,” they wrote in a Facebook post.
Included in the Facebook post were pictures of the inmates on that glorious day. The photos show the inmates holding hands in prayer, getting ready for baptism and being baptized in a prison tub.
A group picture of the inmates and the people who helped these men to turn to Christ was also captured to mark and celebrate this joyful day.
Stop The Violence
Darlington County Sheriff Tony Chavis also revealed that it all started during a Stop the Violence meeting at the beginning of the year.
Chavis suggested getting ministers and mentors on the local level “in an attempt to stop the return of these young men and women back into the system. If we are able to touch one of these lives for Christ … that they know they don’t have to stay in a life of crime, so they would have a way out of prison through the Lord.”
A few months into the mentoring program, nearly thirty inmates have already decided to turn to Christ and be baptized. Prison reform also mentors the inmates and helps them get jobs in addition to teaching them to share the Gospel.
The Darlington County Sheriff’s office also shared that jail can be the beginning of the ultimate forever. And that ultimate forever is their brand new life in Jesus Christ.
“Jail doesn’t have to be the end; it can be the very beginning of the ultimate forever,” they wrote.
