A black man adopted a white 11-year-old boy abandoned by his first adoptive family at a hospital and showed him what a loving family looks like.
Peter Mutabazi
Peter Mutabazi has been a foster parent for over three years despite being single. He has already sheltered many kids and helped them in their transition from being an orphan to belonging in a family. One day, he received a call that changed his life forever.
11-year-old Tony
Foster care worker Jessica Ward called Peter to request him to take the 11-year-old Tony for the weekend. Tony had a tough childhood after his birth parents gave him up for adoption. After spending years in the foster care system, at the age of four, he was adopted by an Oklahoma couple. However, his first adoptive parents abandoned him in a Charlotte, North Carolina hospital when he was 11. Upon hearing his heartbreaking story, Peter decided to welcome him in his home for a lifetime.
“By that time, I was crying,” Peter said in an interview with Good Morning America. “I thought, ‘Who would do that?’ Once I knew the parents’ rights were signed off and he had nowhere to go, I [knew] I had to take him. . . I had the room, the resources, so I had no reason to let him go.”
Loving family
Despite their different races, they were a loving father-and-son duo. They have been enjoying their time as an adorable family. Their story inspired thousands of people online.
“He’s the nicest, smartest kid I’ve ever had,” Peter said. “From day one, he’s always called me ‘dad.’ He truly meant it and he looks up to me. He’s proud to show me at school and say, ‘Hey, he’s my dad.’ That’s something that I love about him.”
Peter’s heart for Tony and for other kids in the foster care system was because of his own rough childhood experiences. He grew up in Uganda in an abusive home and at the age of 10 he ran away to escape his tough situation. Thankfully, someone took care of Peter and helped him become who he is today. To honor the person who saved him when he was younger, he is doing what he has been doing right now t
