Making New Wine: A Season Of Waiting

I admit it – I want instant gratification to all of my prayers, but God sometimes says “wait” along with “yes”. What do we learn from this test of faith and strength? God is speaking to me a lot lately about finding Him in anticipation of seeing prayers fulfilled and learning to trust in His timing, especially when I don’t understand. After all, new wine takes time.

My Story of Waiting

I’m currently waiting for God to completely heal my body following an accident that occurred over the Summer. A few months back, I breathed in sawdust from a piece of an old bald cypress tree while working on an anniversary craft project for my husband. The journey back to health has been long and scary at times, and it’s a constant reminder to look to Jesus as my healer and the source of my strength.

When I started feeling ill, I petitioned God to move quickly with restoration, but He did not sway His decision. In this situation, His “yes” to healing required slow degrees of improvement. At first, I complained. I mean, who doesn’t want the quick-and-easy-fix? However, He knows what outcome is best for my benefit and His glory. God sometimes allows us to walk through our hardships to experience deeper trust, faith, and intimacy with Him.

Lessons learned

I learned many things through this trial:

Psalm 62:5 – God is the sovereign shepherd who protects me. No matter the circumstance, I can find peace and rest in Him.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 – Be thankful in every season of life because each day is a gift. Praise Him in all things.
Luke 12:7 – When fear tries to steal my joy, remember the source of hope. Why should I be afraid if He knows my story from beginning to end and can count each hair upon my head?
Isaiah 60:22 – His timing is not my timing. Trust Him.

New Wine

We grow through life’s tests and trials. Consider your testing process like making wine from grapes. During the process of making new wine, the winemaker crushes and presses the fruit (i.e. the spiritual test or trial). The actions of breaking and separating the grapes create juice. Spiritually speaking, the “juice” equals an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and a deeper relationship with the Lord.

If you are going through a time of “crushing”, do not allow the trials to cause you to miss what God is doing. Instead, rejoice! He is with you and remembers your cries. He is making new wine.

Water Poured Out Changes to Wine

Jesus’s first miracle was performed not in the sight of the wealthy, but that of the lowly servants. Scripture tells us the headwaiter at this wedding didn’t know where the wine came from, but the servers did. The headwaiter was clearly ignorant about the fact the wine had ran out, suggesting he wasn’t very good at stewarding the other servers. As a result, he missed out on a wondrous sign. A friend says, “There are certain things revealed only to those who serve.”

Step of Faith

It was the servants who obeyed Jesus and filled pots to the brim with water, dipped their pitchers in the water, and carried it to him. Can you imagine getting ready to fill his glass, knowing it’s water in your pitcher? Talk about a step of faith! Imagine the server’s relief when it was wine in his master’s cup! The Lord will give us many things, but it’s when we pour out what He gives that the miracles and change happen.

The story goes on. Not knowing where the wine came from, the headwaiter credits the bridegroom for saving the best wine for last, oblivious to Jesus’s involvement.

The Best for Last

Have you ever heard it said, “God saves the best for last”? Often it’s this story that’s used to back up that statement.

But is it true?

When we read this story, the last wine came from Jesus, but the first wine didn’t. It wasn’t Jesus that saved the best for last. In fact, that was His first wine – the first miracle – of His ministry! The very beginning of His ministry was better than the best of man-made efforts. He had the best wine all along.

Jesus’s wine is always the best, whether first or last. We tend not to ask for His wine until we run out of our own. So very often we wait until we are at the end of ourselves to ask for His best. Often we receive His best failing to acknowledge His involvement in creating it.

Hillsong Worship – New Wine

It’s so easy to lose our passion, our wonder, our heart for anything these days. Our lives are so full, consumed by multimedia and it seems that every year, we keep taking “fast-paced lifestyles” to new levels! When was the last time you stopped to take a breath? When was the last time you re-evaluated your routine? When was last time you got back on the altar to surrender every new thing? When was the last time you produced new wine?

But why “wine?” you may ask. Wine is such a significant symbol throughout scripture. Just think about communion and Jesus’ first miracle. Check out this link for all the meanings of wine in the Bible.

Hillsong Worship’s “New Wine” is a call back to the altar. A call back to surrender. Matthew 9:17 says, “Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.” So if we are truly born again, we cannot live the way we always have and expect to be able to carry a fresh anointing from God.

With lyrics like,”Where there is new wine, there is new power; there is new freedom” the song becomes an anthem for a new revelation of Christ to run through our veins and flow out of us like new wine.

I personally love the lines, “In the crushing, In the pressing, You are making new wine.” Sometimes we are being refined and it’s hard. We don’t always see the end result and we feel like we are just going through hell for no reason. I love the fresh revelation in this song. New wine comes from pressure and crushing of our old selves in the same way that the Lord refines us through fire,
