In an interview with Focus on the Family’s Jim Daly, Winsome Sears talked about her Christian faith. She shared how her faith gave her peace and helped her get through life’s storms, including the tragedies of losing family members.
In 2012, Winsome went through a painful tragedy when she lost her 27-year-old daughter and two granddaughters ages 7 and 5. They lost their lives in a car crash. The Virginia Lt. Governor remembers how God kept speaking to her throughout that time. She found comfort in knowing that they were with Jesus.
“I awakened the next morning, and I thought, ‘Well, what am I gonna do? What do I do now?’” she said. “I wasn’t talking to the Lord. But He said to me, ‘Get up, get dressed, and focus on the children you have remaining.’ And He just kept going. And then finally, He said, ‘What do you have here on Earth that’s better than Heaven?’ And then He repeated it again.”

Christian Faith
Before the tragedy, Winsome remembers that her 5-year-old granddaughter, Faith, kept describing heaven. Faith even drew pictures of many mansions, that happened a month before the car crash.
“Grandma, we’re gonna get a big house. Jesus is gonna give us a big house,” Faith told her.
“She meant ‘mansion,’ but instead, she kept saying ‘big house,’” Winsome said.
It was as if God was preparing her for what would have come.
“The Lord knew that it would’ve devastated me,” she said. “He and I have this wonderful relationship where He talks to me about so many things. … If Jesus can cry, then I can cry, too.”
