How the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the world today has been alarming. However, on the other perspective, it has also greatly contributed to worldwide revival.
Newfrontiers global church network founder Terry Virgo believes that “a great spiritual awakening could be birthed out of this surreal time of social isolation and societal dislocation.”
The COVID-19 outbreak led most nations to lockdown. Everyone is encouraged to stay at home and large gatherings are banned. Moreover, every individual is forced to adapt to the new normal. A new practice where people should wear face masks and observe social distancing wherever they go.
Now, the question is how would such an unlikely situation spark a worldwide revival? Well, we cannot box God. His ways and thoughts are always higher than ours.
Seek God For Revival
Terry believes that revival could spark “if followers of Jesus utilized this extraordinary break of daily routine to pray for our nation, and to seek God for revival instead of binge-watching Netflix.”
Further, he added, “My daily prayer is that God will light the flame of revival again. And awaken our indifferent culture to our vulnerability and frailty.”
People in this time of crisis have their attention on “matters of life and death.” Also, the church leader pointed out that “possible financial disaster and loss cannot be ignored.”
Signs Of Spiritual Hunger
Because of the stay at home tenet, citizens instead tune in to worship service live streams and multi-person zoom calls. As a result, church attendance has seen a tremendous uptick, according to Terry.
In the past few months after the global pandemic broke out, most churches are seeing “more than double” their regular attendance. Terry emphasized that “these newfangled digital mediums” are filling up the virtual pews.
He referred to this as a “tremendous opportunity for the people of God. And signals a deep spiritual yearning in the hearts of so many.”
Also, he wrote, “Groups are gathering via Zoom to pray together. Television news is expressing interest in the phenomenon. An Indian friend of mine who usually gathers 3,000 in his church in Bangalore, but is now restricted, reported to me that his most recent online service drew 19,000 views.”
Then Terry concluded, “Maybe we’re beginning to see early signs of spiritual hunger surfacing.”
So he is encouraging Christians today to “pray for nothing less than an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that will awaken the nations,” so that God might do something of “extraordinary proportions.”
