A youth choir from South Africa received a standing ovation for their extraordinary performance of the hit song Africa Dream’ on America’s Got Talent last week!
Ndlovu Youth Choir
The colorful Ndlovu Youth Choir is a choral ensemble from the rural village of Moutse in Limpopo, South Africa. It consists of young people from the Ndlovu Care Group, which provides innovative healthcare, childcare, education and community development to the community.
Limpopo is the northernmost province of South Africa where there is much poverty. These young people live in a challenging environment where many of their homes don’t have running water.
“The challenges these kids face is devastating,” the choir’s conductor, Ralf Schmitt said. “To try and help those orphans and vulnerable children, we started a choir.”
The youth choir was founded in 2009 and since then, it has changed a lot of children’s lives! They are inspiring everyone that any person can achieve excellence no matter their background, their race, their educational attainment or place of birth.
“Just because you’re born in poverty, it doesn’t mean you are poverty. You can go out of that poverty if excellence is offered to you.”
World-class talent
From just being an after-school activity, the choir has evolved into an outstanding professional ensemble. They are now performing internationally to inspire more people. And just a few days ago, they took the stage of America’s Got Talent to open up their talents to the world!
They sang the song ‘African Dream’ in the audition to express their dreams and hopes. The talented group received a standing ovation from the AGT’s judges and audience for their joyful and colorful performance.
Lyrics of the song written by Vicky Sampson include: “In my African dream, there’s a new tomorrow / My African dream is a dream that we can follow / And though it would seem my hope’s an illusion / My African dream is an end to the confusion.”
“We’ve always been waiting for a choir like this. Something we’ve never heard before. Your energy was just literally bouncing off me right there. It was a great audition and you, I’m going to remember. Well done,” judge Simon Cowell said in evaluating their performance.
