The Ballad of an All-American Underdog

No matter how successful you become in life, you’ll always be an underdog in something.

The most real part of being an underdog is simple: realizing that you can be greater than you are now – you just have to work for it!

Questions flood our minds:

What about the things we aren’t good at?

Is it a bad thing?

What will people think?

Is it normal?

To answer all of those questions: DONT WORRY ABOUT IT! You are YOU and will always be YOU! So find what you love and run with it.

For me, I know for a fact that I was not built for a little thing called manual labor. When it comes to fixing a leak, planting trees, hanging a picture or changing a light bulb… I know a guy…and it’s not me.

Maybe what you’re good at is very different than what everyone else is good at – that is okay! Don’t feel isolated or outcast. Feel EMPOWERED! That means it would be easier for you to get a job in that field because you have a gift that others don’t. But, when it comes to your strengths and weaknesses, don’t feel down because you’re not as good at something.

When I was younger, and even now, I HATED playing sports. I know athleticism is not one of my strengths  and I have no desire to play sports, or even watch them! No offense to you American football fans, but if I agree to watch a game, it’s under two conditions: 1) it must involve good food and 2) there must be an awesome concert during the halftime show. I know for an American male this is not common. But, I’m self-aware. I know if something is flying in my general direction, I’m going to:

A. Get hit in the face

B. Block it

Sports just aren’t for me. I have never once felt any shame or guilt when it came to the matter. Even if I was made fun of for not having any athletic desires, I knew that I had strong abilities somewhere else.

My point is, don’t feel like there is something wrong with you because you don’t like what everyone else likes. Don’t feel like you HAVE to agree with those around you, or  like you owe someone an explanation. Do exactly what you’re passionate about and never let what you can’t do distract you from what you were MADE TO DO.

Don’t miss this point

Don’t give up on something because you’re not the best at it. If you have a passion to play football and you aren’t the strongest player right now, put in the extra work and PRACTICE. If you care enough about it, you will succeed.

If you were made to write, then write.

If you were made to sing, then sing.

If you were made to be in the military, then train.

If you were made to be a lineman, then work at it.

If you were made to ride a dirt bike, then practice.

God gave you a passion and an ability, and whether you use it or not – it’s up to you. Keep pursuing your passion and do it to the best of your ability! You can change the world with your gift. You just have to use it.
