Supercharge Your Life With Goal Setting!
When it comes to goal setting, are you taking a day off like Ferris Bueller? If so, it’s time to jump into action.
There might not be the motivating sticker charts that glitter childhood memories. But goal setting is more powerful now as an adult Christian than it was as a child.
Here are 5 reasons why:
#1 Give Your Life Direction
Without goals, your actions may lack purpose. Signs of this include: having trouble making decisions, insomnia, restlessness, apathy, and spending too much time on the couch. But don’t worry–goal setting transforms lives.
Without a purpose, do you think Jesus would have submitted to the Roman authorities, worn a crown of thorns, and been crucified?
In Matthew 26, we find a desperate Jesus whose soul was “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” in the Garden of Gethsemane, praying, “Let not my will but your will be done.”
If Jesus did not have the goal of fulfilling God’s redemptive purpose, he might have given into his despair.
In the same way, the apostle Paul optimistically persevered through long, cruel prison sentences (see 2 Corinthians 11:23), remaining faithful to his evangelistic mission by writing some of his most influential letters.
Goal setting will enable you to endure with courage any situation life throws at you.
#2 Make Your Tomorrow Better than Today
If you feel stuck in a haze of days, set some goals! Goal setting can help differentiate one day from another because each day you become closer to achievement.
Whether you want to land a new job or finish school, setting small, stepwise goals will help you get there.
If you think your daily work goals have nothing to do with your spiritual life, think again. God calls you to work at whatever you do “with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not human masters” (Colossians 3:23).
#3 Motivate Those around You
Just as Jesus’s vision inspired his disciples to change their lives and become fishers of men, so can your goals challenge and motivate your peers and coworkers. While many people walk around in a goalless, hectic daze, people who set goals stand out from the crowd.
If you set goals, you become a leader who others will want to follow–just as Jesus was. And our call as Christians is to be like Christ!
#4 Individual Growth
Stuck in a rut? Feel like you haven’t changed since high school? Setting goals is the solution. You may not notice a day to day difference in yourself, but the arc of your life will be toward growth, not decline.
#5 God Can Work through Goal Setting
Regular prayer, reflection, and journaling to God makes setting goals an even more powerful practice. If you listen for God’s calling and direction and set goals accordingly, you truly will be working for God and not for man.
If you think you don’t have time for regular prayer and goal setting, think again. You may do less, but you will accomplish more.
