Words can either be used to encourage or discourage others. They can either build someone up or tear someone down. And sometimes it only takes one single word to hurt somebody. With that said, every single day, we have to choose what kind of words are we going to release into the world. Are they going to be words that bring life? Or are they going to be words that carry death?
Our words are a reflection of our hearts… When we curse somebody, we are only revealing what’s really going on in our hearts.
Where we dwell, internally, will always make it’s way out. If we are dwelling with the Lord, it’s impossible for darkness to make it’s way out – because there is none. But if we are dwelling in jealousy, greed, negative and gossipy conversations in our minds – Guess what’s going to be revealed in our speech…
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21)
We cannot use our tongue to bless the Lord and curse others at the same time.
Here are two ways we have the power to wield the words of our mouth:
Words that lead to death
Our words actually have the power to lead to both our own destruction and the destructions of the people around us.
Within our tongues, we hold the powerful weapon of declarations.
In Genesis 1 & 2 God simply spoke and the universe was made. The stars, the earth, the ground beneath our feet. He put the same power in our voice: “Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.” (Mark 11:23)
If we are not going to use it wisely, it can be twisted and perverted and used to declare death over someone. The death of relationships (marriages, family, friendships), death of careers, hopes, understanding, reputations, and even lead to physical or spiritual death.
James 1:26 says: “If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.”
There are moments that we need to bridle our tongue, especially in times of anger and pain. We need to choose every word wisely in order to create a peaceful, harmonious and healthy relationship with others, ourselves, and with God.
Words that lead to life
This is the great and miraculous thing about our tongue: it can also carry life!
Proverbs 15:4 tells us “a gentle tongue is a tree of life”.
The overflow of our hearts – our tongues – also have the ability to speak life, just like God displayed in Genesis 1 & 2 with the creation of all that exists! Words bring life to marriages, friendships, jobs, physical bodies and even our environments.
What we communicate to the world leaves a lasting impression on the hearts of those around us. We can choose to plant seeds of faith, hope, joy, love, in the lives of the ones we love. So let’s dwell in the presence of God and allow the overflow of our hearts to bring life to the world.
