Jesus is healer – we hear this phrase a lot, especially in the Christian or charismatic world. But what do we mean when we say it?
More than just a nice thing to say, I believe that Jesus actually means it for real.
Jesus is literally still the healer – our great physician.
We know from the scriptures that Jesus healed thousands of people in his short life. From physical sickness to mental torment, to emotional suffering. Jesus is able to heal us; spirit, soul, and body.
Healer in every area of life
Take a few scriptures for example:
Matthew 12:15 – “Massive crowds followed him from there, and he healed all who were sick.”
Matthew 8:16 – “When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill.”
Matthew 15:30 – “And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them.”
Luke 4:40 – “While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them.”
There is no mistake, Jesus healed everyone who asked and anyone within arms reach.
Although we see Jesus doing those things in the scriptures, some may say that it was only him in his physical form that was able to heal. But to that I would propose this scripture:
John 14:12-14 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”
You see, Jesus wanted to pass the baton. The whole idea was that though he would not live in physical form, his will would go on…
Romans 8:11a “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you”
In John 16: 7, Jesus encourages the disciples telling them that “It is good for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit that raised Jesus from the grave, the Spirit that filled the disciples in Acts 2, the same Spirit that now lives in you… That Spirit was Jesus’ plan to keep his life and his mission alive here on earth.
He – heals – through – you
It is now through our physical hands that the spirit of Jesus heals. Where it was once his own physical bodies, it is now ours. He passed the baton to us. To the children of God!
Hebrews 13:6-9a “So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’ Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace”
He was a healer then, and he is still healer now.
Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you and live in you and continue Jesus’ story – on Earth – in you.
