A shadow war between Iran and Israel appears to be escalating — not only on land, but on the high seas. In recent weeks, Israel suspects Iran is behind several incidents on the open seas, as well as preparations for a future war by proxy on the northern border shared with Lebanon.
In the Mediterranean Sea, at the beginning of February, a suspected Iranian ecological terrorist attack resulted in tons of oil washing up on Israel’s shores.
Two weeks ago, Israel accused Iran of attacking an Israeli-owned container ship with an explosive device as it sailed in the Gulf of Oman.
Last week, an Iranian container ship in the Mediterranean was damaged by an explosion.
The two nations are trading accusations. Iran blames Israel for multiple attacks, even the one that likely resulted in the oil spill. The day after the Iranian ship incident last week, the Wall Street Journal published a story citing “regional officials” who speculate Israel inadvertently caused the oil spill, claiming Israel has hit at least a dozen ships since late 2019 carrying Iranian oil and/or arms to Syria.
Israeli officials had no comment about the most recent container ship incident but did respond regarding who is to blame for the oil spill.
“I can tell you emphatically that Israel is not responsible for the oil spill that caused the considerable damage along the coast,” Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in an interview over the weekend. This is a play out of the Iranian propaganda manual—blame the victim.
With the possibility of the United States re-entering the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal, the stakes in the Middle East are high.
The IDF is preparing for “2,000 missiles a day” being fired at Israel in a future war with Iran, through their proxy, Hezbollah, in Lebanon.
On Monday, Home Front Command Major-General Uri Gordin, speaking at the B’Sheva Conference in Jerusalem, warned that Hezbollah is believed to have approximately 150,000 rockets and missiles, some of which have the capability to hit anywhere inside the country.
“They know they cannot defeat us on the battlefield, so they try to move the war to a second front and that is our homes and in our cities,” Gordin said. “Our enemies on the different fronts need to know that if needed, we will activate a powerful military that has never been seen before.”
