It’s been said by many that the inner voice of God sounds like a “still, small voice.” Here’s a great Scripture to remember,
“And behold, the Lord was passing by! A great and strong wind blew, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire, a still, small voice” (1 Kings 19:11a, 12b).
A key thought – most of us will never hear an “audible” voice of God. But you CAN HEAR an INNER VOICE on a regular basis if you know what He sounds like!

In my new book, Love Speaks: 21Ways to Recognize God’s Multi-Faceted Voice and Masterclass eCourse, I share that hearing God’s voice through the inner voice is the fourth most common of 21 possible ways to have personal contact with God.
What Is The “Inner Voice” Of The Spirit?
Here’s a simple definition,
“An inaudible voice, originating in your sanctified inner spirit. It flows out through your mind simultaneously as a “thought” or even a flood of thoughts.”
It is usually short, to the point, powerful, and sometimes comes as a question. Realize that God is inviting you to ponder and answer Him.
The Inner Voice
Recently my oldest son Ethan embarked on a missions trip to Uganda with the youth group from our local Church. Both my wife and I had been praying for him before his journey. This was the first time he was heading out into the world in missions for two whole weeks apart from us.
As you can imagine, a mother has concern for her children. My beautiful wife Sarah, herself very practical and not much of a worrier, had been praying for him and asking the Father to watch over him. But even for her, sometimes anxious thoughts can arise.
A few weeks ago she was in the car on her way to bring Ethan in for his required shots before his trip, and the Holy Spirit spoke to her in His inner voice, “He’s gonna be okay.”
That brought instant comfort to Sarah! The Lord was going to watch over our son. And he was okay, and the Lord watched over him. He returned from Uganda all enthusiastic for Africa and world missions. The fire that was lit within him by the Holy Spirit continues to burn strong.
The Inner Voice Bring Peace, Assurance, & Rest
Do you see the power in tuning in to the still, small voice, and have the Holy Spirit Himself speak a word of trust that is personal to her prayers and situation? Think of this in light of the difference of this very personal moment vs. just flipping open your Bible and reading some objective truth such as, “trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
The Word, of course, is powerful, but when you combine the power of the Word with the personal voice of the Holy Spirit, there is even more assurance. There’s power in the inner voice! There’s peace, assurance, and rest in the inner voice!
The inner voice is one of the most common of all the ways the Spirit communicates. You just need to be sensitive and learn to actively listen.
What Does That Voice Sound Like?
The answer is, that voice sounds like YOU.
What do I mean? I mean, it sounds like your voice, talking to yourself in a way.
For example, if you are Robert De Niro, God sounds a lot like…Robert De Niro!
Here’s a video clip from the Love Speaks Masterclass to illustrate!
If you just watched that clip, you’ve now heard my ridiculous impression of Robert De Niro! (I’m an evangelist, not an actor LOL). But you get my point, right?
The truth is, you are probably carrying on full conversations with the Holy Spirit, in your mind and thoughts, on a much more regular basis than you might think!
So go ahead…
Listen to the still, small voice…it’s actually originating from within and it’s really truly the inner voice of the Spirit!
