Marna Michele was born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenital, a disability that affects the bones and joints. Due to her condition, she relies on a wheelchair to move around and go to places.

“I was born with a disability called arthrogryposis,” Marna said in an interview with the American Idol host Ryan Seacrest. “My muscles are basically just too weak for my body and my joints aren’t really stiff. So I can move, I can feel, I just can’t walk and I can’t lift my arms above my head.”

The 27-year-old from Costa Mesa, California struggled with her disability growing up.

“Growing up, I try to make it seem like it was not hard and it was just like ‘whatever’ but it wasn’t ‘whatever,’” she recalled.

However, Marna has not let her condition stop her from living a normal life and reaching her goals.

“I live a very full like, I have a job,” she said. “I’m a secretary, I drive my own car, I cook, I clean. It’s everything that my parents weren’t expecting because they were told not to.”

“I want to be that inspiration for the little girl or little boy that’s looking at the TV,” she said right before facing the judges.

As she sang Lady Gaga’s “Million Reasons,” she showed her powerful voice. But, her performance is still in need of improvement so the judges gave her a quick vocal lesson to help her discover her voice more. Despite her flawed performance, the judges still believed in her and gave her the golden ticket to Hollywood.

“This is amazing,” she exclaimed. “It’s the best experience so far in my life.”
