Who Are You Doing Life With?
“I want to know how to connect with God and hear His voice in the middle of my super busy life” my friend said.
I remember that frustration of trying to get my quiet time each day. Instinctively I knew it would be good for me, but where was I supposed to fit it in?
And it’s not just him. So many people I talk to have busy lives. Whether it’s looking after the kids, working long hours at a job or running a business (or any combination of these). So many of us are just busy…
Fitting quiet time into your day
I felt this way too until I realized that it’s not about adding another ‘to do’ onto your already wayyyyy too long list, it’s about an ‘all throughout the day’ conversation that comes from relationship.
This revelation (and learning how to live it each day), was a total game-changer for me. It relieved all the stress of trying to fit my ‘quiet time’ with God into a small window in my day. Instead it broadened it to lots and lots of snippets of conversation all day long.
Let’s see how looking at our quiet time from a relational standpoint, changes the way we do it.
How are you connecting with God?
We often have such a pre-conceived idea of what our Quiet Time needs to look like.
“I must spend at least 30 minutes – study my Bible, read a devotional, write in my journal and pray effective prayers.” And we think that anything short of that will mean that we didn’t do our ‘Christian duty’ and God will be mad at us.
Don’t get me wrong – all of those things are amazing and we do get to do them. The difference is that when we connect with God as our Father FIRST, we want to do those things and we’ll delight in doing them with Him. He wants to connect with us even more than we do, so start with relationship.
How are you growing?
As the delight of relationship with God infects your heart and mind, then you get to put some intentionality behind it. You get to speak to Him throughout the day. Then you want to intentionally create pockets of time to read your Bible daily. And you desire to listen to podcasts, read books, gather in groups and study the Word. So many opportunities!
How are you living this out?
We all know that having a community of people who are as hungry as you are is great – but where do you find them?
I simply ask the Holy Spirit to connect me with the people that I’m supposed to do life with. I say, “Lord, please send me my friends, my colleagues, my mentors, my mentees, the people who will coach me and those who I will coach”. Jesus knows who I am to do life with and so I am just on the lookout for who He is sending and I’m faithful to connect with them.
I want to encourage you that Father God, Jesus and Holy Spirit are excited to deepen their relationship with you. They want to spend time with you throughout your day. Not just in a 30-minute slot in the morning.
