Life can be challenging. God created life to function and exist in communities. Believers and unbelievers need each other. Humans were created to rely on one another in various ways. Everyone has a purpose, a job of some sort and a role to play.
In the Kingdom of God, followers of Jesus need each other. We need to be in community, fellowship with one another and discover our new identity in God. Many of us come from homes or live in situations where nobody else is saved. Being surrounded by unbelievers as a believer can have its challenges, especially for newer Christians.
It can be challenging to leave old habits, ways of thinking and addictions, in some cases.
When we become born again, it’s like becoming a baby again. Transitioning from a non-believer to a believer is a beautiful and new reality. In the process of discovering this new life, God will begin to show us lifestyle patterns that need to go. Having others involved in our lives, makes the journey better.
It can be challenging to find someone who can relate to us.
There’s simply a different reality and outlook on life that transpires for those who are in the family of Christ.
Sometimes people simply need a friend who can relate to their circumstances. If life is filled with unbelievers, who can we really open up with and have that deeper, meaningful conversation? Having godly people in our lives gives place for us to grow, get counsel from others who are more experienced and share each other’s burdens with one another. Having a friend who can listen and understand where we’re coming from is a wonderful gift.
Without godly friendships who will pray for us?
Don’t forget about the power of prayer! Jesus says, “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Everyone needs a brother or sister in Christ to pray with them and for them. Prayer brings breakthrough and invites the Lord into challenging circumstances. Prayer and agreement with another believer is where the battle is won. Thank You Jesus!
Accountability is something everyone needs.
Surrounding ourselves with other believers helps safeguard against temptation and sin.
Speaking from example, having other believers present in my life is a huge blessing. Knowing that I can’t just disappear, do whatever I want and continue on with life is so helpful. The enemy – Satan – doesn’t play fair and he’s continually tempting us with sin. Surrounding myself with other brothers and sisters in the body of Christ is such a blessing because it keeps me focused on the race; to run strong and not lose heart. Running the race in Christ Jesus with one or two other close friends has made a huge difference in my life, and I’m sure it will in yours.
If you’re reading this and can identify with some of what’s written here, ask the Lord to highlight one or two people to cultivate a deeper, intentional relationship with. Start the dialogue with Him and see where He leads you. For others reading this, maybe your life is filled with believers? Could the Lord be speaking to you about befriending a new believer or someone who is going through a challenging time in their life?
Ultimately, through relationship with one another is how we develop Christ-likeness. May the compassion of the Lord touch your heart and the hearts of those around you today.
“As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” – Proverbs 27:17
