A woman who had a mental illness, causing her self-harm and being in and out of the psych ward for 14 years finds freedom in Jesus.
Abusive Childhood
As a young girl, Nichole Marbach suffered sexual, physical, and verbal abuse at the hands of an alcoholic relative. As a result, the abuse caused so much fear and anxiety to her growing up. She couldn’t tell anyone.

When Nichole’s mom divorced and remarried, she started going to church and gave her life to Christ. However, the abuse continued, and she believed in the lie that God was mad at her. Then in high school, the abuse stopped, but the teen found ways to cope with her pain. She started binge drinking, sex, and do self-harm. The teen even cut herself with a razor.
Diagnosed With Mental Illness
Nichole graduated college, got married to Claude, and bore three children. Finally, she thought she was able to bury her horrifying childhood memories. But then, one day, as she was changing her daughter’s diaper, all the memories came back. It triggered so much pain and anger deep inside her.
“I was a mother protecting my child and realizing that nobody protected me,” she said.

From that moment, Nichole kept hearing voices telling her to kill herself because she was a horrible mother and her kids would be better off without her. Then again, she began binge drinking to ease the pain. Her husband, Claude, soon discovered this and insisted on taking her to counsel. That’s when her husband also found out about her abusive past.
The psych doctor diagnosed Nichole with PTSD, bipolar, and anxiety disorder. It got worse, and she spent the next six years attempting to hurt herself. In 2006, she met a Christian psychiatric nurse who shared God’s love for her. That turned her life upside down.
