A young men’s ministry from a Minneapolis church puts aside what they’re doing to meet the current need of their community. In the aftermath of the violent protests and looting, the group opens a pop-up grocery store to replace the burned stores.
Man Up Club
Korey Dean founded the ministry, Man Up Club. He seeks to empower young men to create positive life decisions in preparation for post-high school education. The club reports that they currently have 60 men discipled and mentored in life skills, social skills, academic discipline and civic responsibility.

But in the midst of the chaos from the riots and destruction, Dean and his men stepped up to impact the community in a positive way. “We’re building a pop-up grocery store, if you will, just so we can serve our community,” Dean said. “Because some of our stores are burned, some of our stores are closed because of the COVID-19. So you add this tragic death and situation on top of COVID. And you can kind of get a glimpse of the magnitude from which the community is suffering.”
Moreover, as a black person, he recalled George Floyd’s tragedy traumatic for him. But even so, he credits his faith as his advantage in dealing with difficult times.
“I was devastated to see the police officer with his knee on the neck of George Floyd. That was heart-wrenching to me. And I thought about the long-term implications of what had occurred and the historical perspective of what continues to be perpetuated in America. For me, I have an advantage. My advantage is my faith. My faith in Jesus Christ, and I believe that God is in control of all things.”
Dean also participated in fighting for peace in his community. He prayed in the streets of Minneapolis. “We ask for your forgiveness for any of the sins we have committed. That you would allow us to tap into who you are, and that we would walk like you, and talk like you, and that we would love like you. we bless your name. Help us to keep peace in this city. Help us to keep peace in this country and all over the world. In Jesus name, amen!”
